@UCSBTMP Relatedly, critique of hype is *part* of the hype process, and therefore part of what is *required* for development/integration/harms/value from GPTs. Here's a research paper of mine on a small part of this process:

There's research on hype and new tech! Nelson Phillips, in my dept @UCSBTMP a leader there. tl;dr hype is a predictable, required mechanism for development/integration/harms/value from general purpose technologies. We haven't seen those outcomes without it!

Generative AI tools can make developers up to 55% more productive, but rapid deployment creates dangerous technical debt. To avoid costly system failures, organizations must establish clear guidelines, make technical debt management a priority, and train developers to use AI

The immense scale of AI use, combined with AI being a General Purpose Technology that can be used for many things, means that any story of a successful (or failed) AI use case is an extremely narrow view into a vast sea of successes and failures. Don't over-index on one story.
