Why swifts like @YorkshireWater @tophilllow - massive numbers of emergent insect life from the shallow water bodies on site attract thousands of swifts on migration

Thanks to Mandy Gregory for sending on this selection of images of yesterday’s white throated needletail @YorkshireWater @tophilllow - brilliant find. Perhaps it’ll remember where east Yorkshire’s premier insect diner is!

Still processing what happened this evening. Absolutely mind bending views of the White-throated Needletail along the cliffs and over our heads. Bempton does it again

WHITE-THROATED NEEDLETAIL was performing incredibly well over the O Reservoir and walking area at Tophill Low Nature Reserve today. Mandy Gregory managed to get some incredible shots as it flew low over her head. After it left the site, it moved straight away to the coast.....

The bird had been on site for 30 mins from their description as they had glimpsed it initially and then got better views. They have my email have many more images they are passing on hopefully tonight. Alas in the intervening minute I was studying the images they had left site!

No further sign with many observers now. Bit of background; bird originally reported as an alpine Swift by a Mr & Mrs Maddison. That would be a first for @tophilllow so asked if they had images - they both had (hence the range of file numbers - two cameras).
