I'm not much of a movie person, but I *really* enjoyed seeing Stalker in a theater. BAMPFA is screening all of Tarkovsky's films in Berkeley this summer; I highly recommend checking it out!. Nostalgia is next on the 17th and I'll probably go to that too.

another way I think about it: having a bug tracker makes sense; having personal reminders makes sense; having a company-wide universal "work tracker" doesn't. but that's exactly what jira is designed to be!.

it's not a question of how you use it; tracking and directing work in bite-sized, individual "tasks" is always harmful and ineffective. when done "well" it's merely mediocre rather than straight-up toxic.

teams is bad at what it does. what jira does is bad. and it's bad at it to boot!.

the only reason languages seem like interchangeable tools is that all mainstream languages are mediocre reheated algols.

Either you can design systems or you can’t. If you can’t don’t expect to succeed in any engineering roles. If you can learn to let go of language debates. Literally doesn’t matter they’re just tools. You need to learn the tools in abstract, not memorize npm commands.

I'm worried AI programming is more like the invention of IKEA: cheap, mediocre, factory-produced flat-pack furniture.

it's crazy how "micromanaging junior engineers is bad" has been my most controversial comment on reddit in ages. sometimes it really feels like I live in a different universe from like 95% of the broader industry >.<.

In software engineering circles, there is a common adage: "code is read more than it is written". But code is skimmed even more than it is read!. This is why I value code that is clear at a glance.
