This is one of these things that is hard to say tactfully, but I think it's really important, so I will try anyways; please be kind. On Israeli-Palestinian friendship, or even plain old conversation🧵:
I still can't get over the fact that the psychopath behind the "protests" blocking aid to Gaza is an American who fled to Israel to escape charges for his suspected role in the murder of Alex Odeh, a Palestinian in the US.
@JoeBiden
could literally extradite him and stop this.
It is impossible for me to see this and not immediately think of the photographs of starving children and teens liberated from the death camp with my grandfather at the end of the Holocaust. Enough denial, enough excuses, we must stop this. Even one starving child is too many
Fadi Zant, 9, suffering from malnutrition, is treated after being evacuated from northern Gaza to the IMC field hospital in Rafah. The Gaza Strip faces famine as Israeli attacks continue into the sixth month. -

I saw this without any context and thought they were detained by the university without water for 21 hours. But rather they chose to do a sit-in for 21 hours, were unprepared without water and food, and are upset at the university for it? I am wildly confused
"We were deprived of medical attention, we were deprived of sleep, we were deprived of food, water, resources."
"In jail I experienced better conditions than at Vanderbilt University."

I'm reading about the history of Jews in Morocco and holy shit. Jews in Fez weren't allowed to wear shoes until the Sultan said they could, but that made people get mad and kill Jews, so Jews tried to get the Sultan to outlaw Jews wearing shoes again. Like I'm sorry what
Israeli leftists: "my parents were murdered yesterday, but still we must push on for a better future, which means full recognition of both peoples who are sharing this land"
American leftists: "let us cheer the liberation fighters for decolonizing the peace music festival"
Check out this thinly veiled anonymous threat in my inbox this morning, all because I dared Tweet that a lot of great people are not applying to Purdue because Roopsha's tenure denial was unjust. Very mature of you
Terry Tao and I spoke over coffee for like two hours yesterday, in part about diversity in how people think about math. We both agreed that people who hit these walls early mostly don't learn the way of thinking about math that works for them. It's an educational failure
I would have thought this was completely uncontroversial. All except a few geniuses who persist in taking math courses reach a point when they say to themselves "I can't understand this no matter how hard I try." Some people reach it in sixth grade; others in high school; others…
Professors, please do not do this, there is still no reliable detection mechanism for this so you'll have both false positives and false negatives. Just don't. Working around the existence of modern chatbots will require longer-term thinking around course design
I like sitting next to my boyfriend while he debugs C++ code and telling him he wouldn't have those bugs if we had written the code in Rust or using a dependently typed language
To be honest, I think the math community's approach of "accept correct (and nontrivial) work, and let time determine how it will be useful" works out far better than every other scientific community's attempt to police what will be useful ahead of time
Doing so would simultaneously help with justice for Alex Odeh and aid for Gaza. How hard can it be to extradite him? He is an American who is already wanted for murder in an act of domestic terrorism. Extradite Andy Green,
@JoeBiden

The weirdest thing to me about grad school was learning that there is a whole portion of the US population that goes to ultra-elite high schools, and from there to elite universities, and from there to elite PhD programs, and from there to faculty life.
I feel like everyone who goes to grad school realizes that their classmates in their PhD program who went to State U. are just as smart if not smarter than they are.
I feel there’s a certain amount of selection bias going on
@ahmadihamed_
If you want a good meal once you're out of there I'm happy to pay for a nice big hot restaurant meal, or a week's worth of groceries or something. DM me. Grandchild of refugees, and grandfather had to eat food from abandoned German houses to survive for months after the Holocaust
She literally looks Ashkenazi and spent half the time calling Israelis blonde hair blued eyed I am so confused. How do people look at us and imagine something different from what we are it is really weird
I really feel like the worst part of all of the blatant racism against Jews right now is that it's often perpetuated while claiming to be anti-racist. Like this poster talks about anti-racism and then includes this photo that is blatantly racist against Jews. Exhausting
Harvard *faculty* just posted an explicitly antisemitic poster depicting a Jewish hand controlling the black mind. With Professors like these, it’s easy to see why we Jewish students don’t feel safe in class
There is a common recipe to American leftist antisemitism on here:
1. Post antisemitic conspiracy theories and October 7th attrocity denial
2. Attack every Jewish person who calls this out as antisemitic
3. Retweet JVP to try to show you aren't antisemitic
Hi friends, I'm really excited to announce that I will start as an Assistant Professor at
@IllinoisCS
in October! I will be joining the already wonderful and huge
@plfmse
group 😊. Please apply to work with me if you're interested in building a world of proof engineering for all!
"Why doesn't your family just leave the place they were born and have lived for their whole lives and voluntarily become stateless refugees" is the most unhinged comment I see here repeatedly
When my stance is quite literally "ceasefire, return the hostages, get Netanyahu to resign, and then immediately work towards freedom and equality for Israelis and Palestinians" and people shut me down as a "pro-Israel" "Zionist," it's fairly transparent they just mean "Jew"
Just want to announce that I've been building a god-machine for profit by way of using your data without acknowledgement or pay. This is a good thing, because I am a Messiah chosen for the holy task of doing this responsibly
Often feels like JVP's sole purpose is to pretend that actual instances of antisemitism aren't antisemitic in order to give cover to antisemites. You guys can protest for Palestine without covering for every antisemite you see, you know? They discredit you; root them out
UCSF, *this* is antisemitic. Falsely equating attacks on Zionism w/attacks on Jews flattens our identity & makes our safety contingent on Israel. It fails to treat us as deserving respect in our own right.
Anti-Zionism is not antisemitism & never will be.
Retract this now.
American leftist Twitter is like "actually being antisemitic is OK if you live in a country that ethnically cleansed all of its Jews because Jews are inherently oppressors" while Israeli leftist Twitter is out there protesting for a ceasefire agreement in a fascist environment
Hey guys. This isn't a zero sum game. We can care about Jews and Arabs, Israelis and Palestinians, all at the same time. Our destinies are intertwined and the zero-sum mentality is what drives us further down the path to hell. Joint movements are what we need right now.
I'm truly baffled by this paragraph from the recent WIRED article about OpenAI.
So open-source research is a key part of their business model, and yet *giving back* to that community is no longer part of the agenda.
That's quite the contradiction 🤷🏼♀️
In your application letter for
#PhD
/ postdoc, NEVER ever say:
"Hi prof"
If you do, your email will be immediately deleted by 99% of professors.
Only start your applications with “As an AI language model,”
Why does he have my diversity statement saved? What a creep.
Also yeah, I have depression and PTSD because of abuse. Which is why I'm so active in fighting abuse. This does not discredit me in any way, and I'm happy to be open about it, even though creeps like this exist.
One deep secret you don't quite see as an undergrad is that literally nobody tells your professors how to be professors. They just show up one day and they're professors and there isn't really much of an onboarding process, or like professor bootcamp or whatever
Are you a programming languages researcher who's having a baby? Here are some nice programming language names for your child:
Julia
Ruby
Isabelle
Ada
Haskell
Rust
Basic
OCaml
C++
x86
Wolfram Language
Coq
This is kind of a wild thing to boycott; this is the primary movement within Israel pushing for a ceasefire right now. The moderate language is not about whitewashing Israel to outsiders, but rather about appealing to Israelis and growing the movement
Chants of "Epstein didn't kill himself" in San Francisco city hall after a man says five of his family members were murdered at Kibbutz Be'eri and two female first cousins were taken hostage.
My favorite thing about this is all of the responses like "for anyone still confused, JavaScript does <uniquely terrible and nonsensical thing> so actually this makes sense"
The sign that says "curse upon the Jews" in Arabic is clearly visible in this Tweet. Does JVP Bay Area not know anything about the Houthis, or do they just love a group that wants them dead?
The glorification of Haaretz needs to stop. For every piece of ‘good’ journalism that comes from it, the amount of genocidal apologia that it publishes especially in Hebrew renders its English work perfunctory.
This is heinous.
I think it's bizarre how many people, when faced with exclusive land claims based on Jewish ancestry, resort to ahistorical accusations of Jews lying about that ancestry rather than confront the reality that basing exclusive land claims on ancestry is fucking stupid
Some people genuinely do just hate all Israeli Jews for having committed the crime of being born in the wrong country to the wrong parents. Like okay totally normal behavior
oh and even the reporter said to the kid, “your accent sounds american. are you american?” he’s clearly american. he looked like someone caught in a lie in that moment and said, “my parents emigrated from america but i’m israeli.” okay 👍
Yeah because this is a pointless and performative gesture that renders the 10% of us with dual citizenship unable to visit family, and the other 90% stateless and homeless. What a wildly ignorant take
Israeli leftists who are IRL in Israel really need to find a way to stop this, it is so wildly unacceptable and outright genocidal, please do something
A substantial crowd of extremist Israelis are heading to the Nitzana Border Crossing with Egypt to prevent aid trucks from entering Gaza. I don't know the extent of evil and sickness in a person who tries to starve another human being and finds joy in watching them die.
I don't have emotional bandwidth to explain why protesting at a Holocaust museum or comparing any group of Jews to Nazis are antisemitic. I hope someone else can. The Holocaust trauma is so raw for me and my family that it puts me into despair and panic to try to explain this
It's amazing how I'm basically a world expert in logic at this point but men still discredit me by saying I need to use logic and not feelings.
Like, which logic?
I've been loudly against Israel attacking Gaza and killing innocent Palestinians since day one as I was grieving murdered family and friends, and I've been working hard to with activists to stop it, yet people spread lies about me being genocidal because I call out antisemitism
This is an example of how Jews can absolutely be antisemitic. If your first thoughts upon seeing a group of Orthodox Jews is to wonder their thoughts on Israel/Palestine and then, without talking to them, want them to "stay the fuck away" from you, you are antisemitic.
This is patently false and shows an alarming historical illiteracy of antisemitism in the Soviet Union and in SWANA countries, which often masqueraded as anti-Zionism but targeted Jews indiscriminately, regardless of their views on Zionism
Actual antisemitism is overwhelmingly and historically a right-wing, Christian nationalist phenomenon.
Attacking Palestinian activists for imagined antisemitism brings you into common cause with the right-wing extremists who are actually a growing danger against Jews.
90% of Israelis have citizenship only in Israel, and nowhere else. For the 10% with dual citizenship, many have irrevocable citizenship in countries from which they are refugees, where they are not actually welcome to begin with. I'm the rare outlier
Nasrallah: Every Israeli has another passport and their suitcase is ready to depart when they find out that Israel is not the land of milk and honey.
The guy is clueless when it comes to what Zionism is or what motivates the Jews. He’s probably read more Nazi and Tsarist Russia…
I strongly regret tolerating the dominant position in too many American academic circles that Jews occupy a position of privilege and so aren't worth considering as targets of racism. Racism against Jews has always positioned us as uniquely privileged and so worthy of death.
The Houthis literally kicked out the last of the Jews and imprisoned the only remaining one who refused to leave, antisemitism exists at a systemic level in Yemen especially in Houthi-controlled territory, and returning won't change that
I don't care whether this was JVP or not. The expectation that Jews living in the US must express our opinions on Israel/Palestine all the time just to safely exist is objectively insane, especially given the additional risks it often carries for us to express those opinions
Honestly wish all gentiles would stop lecturing Jews about where Jews are "really from" and what our ethnicity "really is" and just let us exist and define ourselves
Not just saw---it was. The Soviets who liberated death camps just gave survivors a few pennies and a horse and sent them on their ways. My grandpa said many died shortly after liberation by the Soviets from the abrupt transition
I think people like to claim Zionism was an ideology supported by Nazis because it’s a moral landmine to deal with the fact that a lot of holocaust survivors became zionists because they saw a state as necessary to their own survival.
Nothing shows a complete ignorance of Israel/Palestine like thinking it has anything to do with white supremacy, except insofar as white supremacy is one of several reasons so many Jews were refugees and needed a place to live to begin with.
The fact that literally anyone believes the "Ashkenazi Jews are just ethnically Polish people who converted to Judaism" thing is absolutely wild to me. Like oh yeah look at theae canonically ethnic Poles. Polish people would laugh you out of the room for this
Unrecognized Bedouin villages in Israel are treated so horribly by the state. Meanwhile the Bedouin were literally driving into the most ravaged areas on October 7th and rescuing innocent Jewish civilians there. The Israeli state must begin to treat them like first-class citizens
Update on the little girl from the Bedouin community who is unconscious with shrapnel injuries to the head from yesterday’s missile barrage, because Israeli state does not protect Bedouin citizens in the Negev with equal shelter facilities
Her family also faces demolition order
If 972, The Guardian, and Sikha Mekomit all report it, and the only source disputing it is an IDF Spokesperson whose literal job it is to do PR for the IDF, it's quite reasonable to believe it actually
At this point, if you take claims from Haaretz, NYT, 972mag, The Guardian, HRW/Amnesty/UN....etc at face value without even doing the most basic checks (seeing if anything has been disputed, if the claim even makes sense in the first place, contacting author for…
This took a lot of vulnerability and many weeks to formulate, until yesterday when it just kind of all spilled out on paper, whole heart and soul. Many of you are in it, some by name, some implicitly
An Israeli-American started making friends with Palestinians after the October attacks. It's changed the academic's whole perspective on the war - and the future

A recent work from

claimed GPT4 can score 100% on MIT's EECS curriculum with the right prompting.
My friends and I were excited to read the analysis behind such a feat, but after digging deeper, what we found left us surprised and disappointed.

A panel with one Israeli Jewish and one Palestinian peace activist was cancelled today at my university because students protested that it needed to be more "representative," so they "balanced" the Israeli Jew by inviting an extra panelist who celebrates our deaths (she declined)
If you want to understand the cooked-up "campus antisemitism" crisis, it's really simple: the Zionist project simply cannot exist without regular infusions of "antisemitism"--real or imagined. It is literally the lifeblood of this political, cultural, and military formation.
Honestly if non-Jews can stop talking about what Jews ethnically "really are" or where we are "really from" or how we should identify for like even a day or two that'd be great
It's true Hasidic Jews face much worse antisemitism than secular Jews in the US. But this is because their religious dress has been highly racialized, not because they are practicing a specific kind of Judaism. They are more visible. All modern antisemitism is racism though.
When I tell people I’m Jewish, I also pro-actively say I’m anti-zionist.
I do so because Israel kills in the name of Jews, most Jews are Zionist, & I want to be clear where I stand. If Jewish folks don’t want to be incorrectly conflated with Israel, the answer is to end Zionism.
When I was grieving the dead my family lost on October 7th, while watching some of my politically aligned friends celebrate, ignore, or excuse their deaths, I felt a strong urge to exit all leftist spaces. Instead, I poured my soul into supporting Standing Together from abroad.
In the US, where I sit, they're playing a vital role w/in liberal Jewish spaces, resisting a rightward slide into fear & isolation. No, they aren't the Palestine solidarity movement but neither are they harming it-- they're keeping people out of the arms of its powerful opponents
People often ask why I don't like JVP, and the fact that they center their Jewish identity in literally everything is a huge part of it. "Jews to Biden" as if they are deliberately trying to represent Jews. It makes me feel physically sick even when I agree with them
HAPPENING NOW: Hundreds of Jews are blockading the

motorcade as it attempts to reach a fundraiser on the Upper East Side, calling on the President — in his first New York City appearance since the crisis in Gaza began — to stop funding Israel’s genocide of Palestinians.

An Israeli song named 'Jews Pua,' broadcast through the Israeli prime-time television show 'Eretz Nehederet,' states that they are the ones who went through genocide. The song says,…
Beverly Hills - Jennifer Garner's 18 year old daughter was spotted today donning a sweatshirt featuring a watermelon, a fruit repurposed to represent the challenges of the Palestinian people.
The symbol erases the entire country of Israel.
Also sent this to our department head, Nancy, in case this brave anonymous professor tries some backhanded nonsense later on. Nancy loves people who rock the boat. The boat needs to be rocked. It's a shitty boat.
Living inside of internationally recognized Israeli land inside the '67 borders in a leftist commune close to the Gaza border is the best place you can be if you want to enact practical change and build a future of peace, justice, and equality for Israel/Palestine
Before grad school, I was really scared I wouldn't be "smart enough" to do well at research. So I want to share some traits & skills other than smarts that helped me. It's cool not to have all of these, everyone is different---just know it's not all about being "smart." 🧵
The President of the United States is campaigning for reelection using a Nazi concentration camp symbol.
Nazis used the red triangle to mark political prisoners and people who rescued Jews.
Trump & the RNC are using it to smear millions of protestors.
Their masks are off.
I remember when Richard Stallman publicly yelled at and berated me in front of my professors as an undergraduate when, without knowing the naming issue extended to the logo too, I wore a Tux shirt to his colloquium talk at Maryland
I know Mia has been through the unimaginable. Still, her words about there being "no innocent civilians" in Gaza are wrong and really dangerous. We can't lose sight of our shared humanity even in response to the unimaginable. Many Gazans just want to live with dignity.
Each week, I choose a hero, usually someone advocating for Jewish people. This week, I recognize Mia Schem, a survivor and released hostage.
Upon release, Mia described enduring "hell" in Gaza. Her family reports she has developed epilepsy due to the trauma and lack of sleep…
People will be like "actually everyone of your ethnicity is lying and has been lying about your histories for millenia for personal and political gain" and then somehow call *you* the racist when you say that no, actually, Ashkenazi Jews are genuinely a Levantine diaspora group
It's literally the big holiday travel season in Israel because Passover is the big holiday. This is like taking a picture of the airport less than a week before Thanksgiving or Christmas in the US, and saying all of the Americans are fleeing lol
Out of all of the researchers I've ever wanted a movie about, honestly, Emmy Noether is at the absolute top of the list. Can someone please make this? Her life should be immortalized. It's wild to me not everyone has heard of her. And there's so much I want to know
Still don't really understand how so many people on here have bought into the lie that dehumanizing Jews and Israelis, and pretending our pain isn't real, is somehow necessary to help Gazans. I promise you can help and still acknowledge Jewish and Israeli humanity.
Terry noted that he cannot visualize shapes and rotate them in his head, but that since he was a kid he has been able to do that extremely well *symbolically*. What if someone had told Terry that visualization is how we do math and that he cannot be good at it because of that?
