Zagreus's cosmic reign is averted when he is torn apart and devoured as a child by the Titans; Wells refers to Martian fighting-machines as "Titans" three times in the book, with one such instance occurring during the pivotal scene where they destroy the Thunder Child

This feels like a violation of the Blinovitch limitation effect

Do you ever wonder if Wells named the ironclad Thunder Child after Dionysus Zagreus, revered by the Orphic mystery cult as Zeus's anointed heir, who when placed upon his father's throne clasped the thunderbolts with his infant hands

I never understood "born and bred in the briar patch" as an explanation for why Br'er Rabbit loves getting thrown there and starts hopping around. If you locked me in St Munchin's maternity ward I would not be starting a solo rave like your man out of Spaced, for a while anyway

I experience a species of elation whenever I see a guy unwittingly wearing a Captain Kirk-coloured top. The shade is so distinctive that I always notice it instantly and it always adds some great extra layer to literally whatever is happening

The existence of disaster (bad star) implies the existence of euaster (good star). A sudden, cataclysmic harmonizationโthe correction of all things, a moment of violent alignment

As I kid I intuited that the robot had in some sense always been there, and was a timeless feature of the moon itself, naturally occurring. (In The Little Prince, no-one installed the Lamplighter's lamp; no carpenter fashioned the Businessman's desk; they just are.) But I wonder.

Does the presence of the vending robot imply that a lunar colony was established and abandoned prior to Wallace's arrival? Is the breathable atmosphere a result of terraforming?

Wicked For Good is interesting if you can forget the Wizard of Oz context: the farmgirl who abruptly enters the story halfway through is filmed with reverent horror, like the shark in Jaws; the final hour is a huge montage skipping all major plot events. Beckettian.

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland being about cards and Through the Looking-Glass chess, I often wonder what game a third book would have focused on: possibly snooker
