Watched Sofia Coppola's PRISCILLA tonight. Beautifully staged and well-done understated performances all around. A calm rebuttal to the excess of Baz Luhrman's biopic.
Sadly though, she chose not to depict my favorite moment from Priscilla Presley's book:
John Waters is trending, so I have an excuse to repost one of his mantras that I've taken to heart:
"I thank God I was raised Catholic, so sex will always be dirty."
Today should have been Clu Gulager's 95th birthday.
So to honor his memory, have an afternoon nap, take a long walk somewhere, sit in the front row of a movie, then find a diner open long past midnight and tell a ribald story over fried food. Be the legend folks want to remember.
Mega-thread on the dawn of home video, and how the major studios came at the format. I've been film-obsessed since the 4th grade, and saved countless brochures from when I started paying attention to this practice, so lots of long-unseen material here to intrigue you:

IFC is airing "EVERYBODY LOVES RAYMOND"
BBC America is airing THREE AMIGOS

Cable networks don't give a damn about their brand anymore. With a vengeance.
@jicastillo
I did my best to make it all sound like it really happened. Apparently, I did my job too well! I'm waiting for that phone call from Snopes any minute now.
I have no intention of seeing the new SPACE JAM, but if you'll indulge me, I've been following the discourse about its involvement of iconography from Ken Russell's THE DEVILS, and the bafflement that it's being integrated into a "family" film. It may be a genius move. (1/x)
Repertory programmers are facing a new problem in that many films from the 80s onward released by the majors are reverting to third party companies that don't have full-time booking departments or provide exhibitable elements, making cinema play more difficult.

Entertainment history is full of stately promising men who flamed out, fell from grace, and became footnotes or punchlines. I pray Rick Dalton grasped what a lucky man he was to have a long career, peer respect, and to live out his life full measure.
Here's to dreams come true.
We are saddened by the news of the passing of actor Rick Dalton, best known for his roles in the hit TV series Bounty Law and The Fireman trilogy.
Rick passed away peacefully in his home in Hawaii and is survived by his wife Francesca.

When your studio owns two movies with the same name, and your social media director doesn't bother to check the date on the still image with the date on the film.
Louis & Ira engage so wonderfully with iconic talent when they have new projects to push that if the gents weren't busy doing great new creative works themselves, I wish they would have a second podcast just for interviewing 70s and 80s actresses that don't have anything to plug.
BREAKING: Hollywood writers are striking.
They’re fighting for their livelihoods against billion-dollar studios and streaming companies who have been squeezing writers to eke out more profits.
Writers didn’t shut down Hollywood — the studios did.
So fun to see a sold-out, polite crowd for

I'll take Lee Pace's trending time to remind you that Tarsem's masterpiece THE FALL, the 2nd best film of the noughts and a showcase for Pace's gifts, is not streamable and the Blu is long OOP. I don't even know if it's available for repertory play. THIS IS A CRIMINAL OFFENSE!

I'm gonna miss you, mister.
It's shitty news in a shitty time, but the Pacific Theatres closing is a trick.

It's Clu Gulager's birthday. He continues to be an inspiring iconoclast and a loving father figure to untold numbers of movie lovers here in L.A., and surely worldwide as well.

It's easy for anyone to honor Gary Stewart's legacy. Indulge in a creation you love. Take a pal to the movies. Give someone you haven't talked to in a while a great album they likely don't own. Pick up a stranger's tab at the pub. Enjoy something and share it with another.

Those are my hands doing the work.
How'd it happen? Dumb luck.
In 1976, an unusually angry adult film, HOT SUMMER IN THE CITY, charged by the memories of a child of the 60s, played cinemas. And it has many striking points of symmetry with ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD. Read my blazing history of creation at my blog:
Whether it was their intention or not, Malcolm Lee & the SPACE JAM writers have effectively demonstrated to WB that the controversy over THE DEVILS is done, and if anything, general curiosity in the film has gotten squared, if not cubed. It's relevant to the young again. (14/x)
@louisvirtel
I want more love for Herry Monster. Between his blocky shape and his gruff voice, he wasn't cute like Grover or had the fun fetish like Cookie, so he had to work harder to earn people's love, when in truth he loved his doll Hercules and his striped pants and had a gentle soul.
This gentleman is not wrong. Don't think I haven't noticed lots of you zygotes biting my style. The difference is that I was paid scale to heel up my behavior for a comedy game show while you're out here living your gimmick 24/7. I don't live my life like I'm made out of mouth.
JOE starring Peter Boyle was a '70s phenom that today is one of those movies people "know" but likely haven't seen.

I've lain out how it happened at the Bev blog. As Wadsworth said in CLUE, I know because I was there.
There are so many Paramount flix of 70s & 80s era that aren't just not on DVD due to music rights, but aren't VOD rentable or streamable either. So here's a thread for
@paramountplus
, hoping they'll add them as
#ParamountPlusVault
fare for folks like us in search of deep cuts:
This was effectively how me and my BtG mates got rooked by 20th Television: promises of residuals after so many reruns and bumps with each season. Then they labeled our second 65 episodes as a "cycle" instead of a "season," and conveniently pulled the reruns before our $ was due.
Now then, Sister Jeanne is integrated into SPACE JAM. And interestingly, there's no religious kooks on Fox screaming about normalizing blasphemy in family entertainment. Who's actually angry? We fans of THE DEVILS who can't buy an uncut Blu! There's a message in that! (13/x)
Did anyone catch the moment in "The Irishman" where Joe Pesci's character instructs De Niro to meet up with David Ferrie -- the very man Pesci played in "JFK"?
I don't think this will necessarily fast-track a truly uncut Blu of THE DEVILS; the slashing of jobs and divisions and the decimation of Warner Archive that AT&T foisted is not easily reversible even under Discovery management. But I think a corner has finally been turned. (15/x)
I've concluded that one of the reasons I loved doing "BEAT THE GEEKS" so much was that it felt like our own version of "THE MONKEES"; we were hired just to do a TV gig, but all of us on that show inspired each other to be better, work as a team, and make something really special.

To be clear, THE DEVILS is not suppressed so much as hobbled. 35mm playdates are rare, there's no bookable DCP, no US DVD, no Blu anywhere, and the UK DVD and occasional streaming editions are all edited versions. A director's cut DCP has played only thrice. Here's a guide. (6/x)
Delores Taylor, who shared writing and producing credit on the BILLY JACK films with her husband Tom Laughlin, passed away on Friday.

Do kids watch CASABLANCA? No, it would bore them.
Should kids watch THE EXORCIST? Hell no, it will scare them.
Are these films so embedded in our culture that kids know the basics of their stories and can appreciate jokes? Yes.
That's why they're parodied in Looney Tunes. (11/x)
