@mtdtl @ajwsmall @ChongJaIan @willschoong There's speculation about China snubbing the Shangri-la Dialogue because it sees the event as more of a platform for the US and allies. But in the absence of a strong Chinese presence, this year's event ends up dominated by criticism of Beijing from the US and its allies.

@mtdtl @ajwsmall @ChongJaIan @willschoong Australia's defence minister Richard Marles called on China to explain why it needs to have "such an extraordinary military build-up", while Philippines' Gilberto Teodoro Jr has called China "absolutely irresponsible and reckless" in the South China Sea.

@mtdtl @ajwsmall But @ChongJaIan said while Asian govts will listen, "how much they will comply is a different story". And @willschoong said w few exceptions how Asian countries see China is "not parallel" to how Europe sees Rus, so Hegseth's call "at best is ignorance, at worse is hubris".

When the #MyanmarEarthquake struck, hundreds of Muslims doing their Friday prayers were crushed to death as their mosques collapsed. For Soe Nay Oo, former imam of Sagaing's biggest mosque, the loss has been unbearable. My report with @bbcburmese :.
