The last memory Han Tae-soon has of her daughter as a child is in May 1975 - she would not see her again for 44 yrs. Now she's suing S Korea's govt. You can read more on Korea's controversial overseas adoptions in this piece written by me and Juna Moon.

@mtdtl @ajwsmall @ChongJaIan @willschoong There's speculation about China snubbing the Shangri-la Dialogue because it sees the event as more of a platform for the US and allies. But in the absence of a strong Chinese presence, this year's event ends up dominated by criticism of Beijing from the US and its allies.

@mtdtl @ajwsmall @ChongJaIan @willschoong Australia's defence minister Richard Marles called on China to explain why it needs to have "such an extraordinary military build-up", while Philippines' Gilberto Teodoro Jr has called China "absolutely irresponsible and reckless" in the South China Sea.

@mtdtl @ajwsmall @ChongJaIan @willschoong China has blasted Hegseth's speech not once but twice, with a Facebook post by the embassy in Singapore and a statement on the foreign ministry website

@mtdtl @ajwsmall But @ChongJaIan said while Asian govts will listen, "how much they will comply is a different story". And @willschoong said w few exceptions how Asian countries see China is "not parallel" to how Europe sees Rus, so Hegseth's call "at best is ignorance, at worse is hubris".

@mtdtl @ajwsmall Afterwards I spoke with Sen Tammy Duckworth who said his speech was "patronising" , while Reps Brian Mast and John Moolenaar said it sent a clear message of China's threat and was welcomed by Asian countries whom they spoke to.

@mtdtl @ajwsmall In the US keynote speech Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth warned of an "imminent" China threat to Taiwan and compared Asia allies to Europe, saying they should follow suit and spend more on defence, up to 5% of GDP

@mtdtl @ajwsmall China has a much more muted presence at the Shangri-la Dialogue this year with a lower-level delegation and no keynote speech. It's the first time since 2019 they haven't sent their defence minister. No official explanation except state media saying don't overinterpret this.

@mtdtl @ajwsmall Observers predicted China wld be angered by Macron's Taiwan remarks - they were right. But instead of denouncing it at a dialogue presser as they did to others last yr, they posted a statement on Facebook

Macron's cred comments was "implied criticism" of US's ME policy and "direct call" on US to adjust diplomacy to Rus said @mtdtl . Some in Asia may welcome his Europe pitch given anxieties over US & China and "genuine concern" of how China may interpret Rus victory said @ajwsmall.

It's the last day of the Shangri-la Dialogue, here's a recap. French President Emmanuel Macron kicked it off by warning US & Europe they risked losing credibility over Ukraine & Gaza, and made a pitch for Europe as a new ally to Asia apart from US & China

Thanks to BBC Newsday for having me to discuss the Singapore #GE2025 results. I spoke on why voters flocked to the PAP, what this means for PM Lawrence Wong's mandate, and why the result is still significant for the opposition WP.

Some expected Singapore's WP to make gains this #GE2025 - but instead voters sought safety in the PAP amid fears of global turbulence. My news analysis for the BBC w thanks to @ChongJaIan Rebecca Grace Tan and Teo Kay Key .

When the #MyanmarEarthquake struck, hundreds of Muslims doing their Friday prayers were crushed to death as their mosques collapsed. For Soe Nay Oo, former imam of Sagaing's biggest mosque, the loss has been unbearable. My report with @bbcburmese :.
