Teachers are well aware of issues with their working conditions, pay, benefits, and professional autonomy, yet for years we’ve been told this is the best we can hope for. Now we have an opportunity for real & meaningful change. Let’s not waste it.
“Why can't we attract and retain teachers the way we used to? We know the answer: We’re forcing them to earn less & work longer. We’re telling them the bargain they made to work in public service & have the benefit of a public pension is being taken away.” - @ZohranKMamdani

Regardless of what stereotypes we hold about unions, there is no denying their impact & influence on the daily lives of regular New Yorkers. @UFT is a key player in NYC politics and this endorsement is hugely significant.
We tend to think of unions as just white dudes in hard hats with thick accents, but education is one of the most unionized professions, if not the most. We just dismiss it because we think women's jobs aren't "real union jobs." Zohran getting their backing is big.

This is HUGE. @ZohranKMamdani stands for so much of what teachers want: fair pay, workers’ rights, affordable quality healthcare & childcare, anti-fascist, equitable policies that support our communities…and it’s starting to feel like we can actually get some of these things.

There is never a single reason test scores improve or decline. It certainly doesn’t vindicate a mandatory scripted curriculum that most teachers don’t even really use.
NYC elementary school reading scores on “screeners” increased by 2.5 points over a year which Weisberg attributes to mandated reading program. But elem math scores rose by 3.2 points though there is no mandated math program
