Today the Gautrain bus driver asked me if someone was waiting for me. I told him no, so he dropped me off at the end of my street, instead of the bus stop, waited until I had walked up the street and then hooted to let me know he was leaving...I guess he’s been watching the news.
This case brings to light how perpetrators of apartheid were not held accountable and more specifically prevented from being held accountable by high ups in the new government post ‘94. They pranced freely and successfully through the lives they terrorized
Read it again: The apartheid cop whose interrogation methods led to the alleged suicide of Neil Aggett, has reinvented himself as a business counterintelligence consultant.
Lol, just got out of a meeting. “You need to speak to the technical person developing this”. To which I had to respond, “I am the technical person developing and deploying this”.
Counting blessings: teachers, mentors, privileges, opportunities, resources and life experiences.
And looking to put my foot in the door.
I have 90 girls interested in learning about programming but I need help.

I spend a fair amount of time keeping up to date with AI horror stories. Let’s explore how our failure in defining humanity is getting in the way of building great machines. And what that potentially means for us in the African context. Join us on the 10th.
Our WCW of the week is; Jade Abbot
Abbot is a renowned software developer who isn't only co-directing a growing tech firm but has been doing so for years. The icing on the cake? She's just clocked 30 years earlier this month.
She Develops software and analyses data.

Our beautiful country is going through an awful time now. It is worth remembering that most South Africans are better than those shown in the news and social media . Most are kind, caring people who want the best for their families. Don't lose hope & try to help others in need.
@Thulani_Azanian
@Daddy_Mack
I appreciate your concern. I think though, that more people and men in particular should be encouraged to take on the responsibility of the consequences of widespread GBV and that fear mongering discourages such.
Let’s not forget that apartheid did not end because it was wrong, it ended because it was no longer economically viable. And this case was one which revealed workings of the security police, assisting in the loss of confidence in Apartheid government by international community.

Observe images of Amira blessing us with her brilliance making quantum computing sound so easy. Also have you ever thought about going into Quantum Machine Learning? Well go then.
I am offended by this term “medical apartheid”. What a fundamental misunderstanding of what Apartheid was and what it meant for the people of South Africa.
We have this table in our most recent paper. It shows the number of wikipedia articles in that language, and their respective speaker population sizes. 🗣️
Pained by the constrast between Afrikaans and isiZulu. 😫

Actually I was thinking about this the other day. That if only my toothbrush could scan my teeth for plaque while I was brushing and tell me where I need to brush more in real time. I don’t think this is what this is though.

This inquest is not just about finding peace for the Agget family and those who cared for Neil but also highlights the failure of the TRC to deliver truth and reconciliation. Young people of colour have inherited anger and bitterness where peace was promised.
Lord grant me the confidence of an AI researcher pronouncing his own theories of consciousness without reading any of the decades of relevant philosophical debate
Separate your pet bottles. Remove the labels, remove the lids. And put them out on trash day, separate to your grossness. Less digging, less trash escaping because of the digging, give a little respect for a job well done. Give a gift of a little bit of dignity.
But “great job guys” would be perfectly acceptable whether you were all kick-ass women or not right? I have been trying to permanently replace the word “guys” in my vocabulary with the word “ladies”. It hasn’t worked out very well.
@wethinkcode
COO sent an email "great job ladies". Heart racing, I did a rapid gender audit. Happy to report it was all clear. Both our campuses are headed up & administered by a team of kick-ass black women. I smiled all the way from my liver! Its taken 19yrs to experience this.

Before you spread conspiracies about the timing of B.1.1.529 just do a double check it’s not your ego trying to convince you that you are part of a small exclusive club that is “smarter than EVERYONE else”…to help you feel importanter. People will die because of your ego.
Looking for a P2P, emersive learning based curriculum/program that:
1. Is relevant to South Africans and the issues we face
2. Is not just about coding but also algorithmic thinking, bias and ethics issues regarding automation
3. Aimed at high school level
Machine learning courses really need to stop using gender as a binary classification example. It’s not a classification example. Nor is it a binary classification example

The desperation for the end of apartheid compromised terms of negotiation, including lack of accountability from all those who benefited from the oppressive regime and supported it/didn’t do anything about it.

A widespread misconception about ML is that models are neutral/objective & just reflect the data fed into them.
Modeling choices encode strong assumptions about the data, and further, the way you use your model in your application reflects your own understanding of the problem.
A lot of effort and well done for that.
But I am very much looking forward to the day when language models do not require the type of resources inaccessible to most and when there is a competition for the smallest number of weights. 10 billion? There must be other ways.
We've released the weights (1.3B and 2.7B) of our replication of GPT-3 🥳
Using the updated Colab notebook in the repo you should be able to finetune the models on your own data as well as run inference.

I don’t think I like this. GPT-3 is too powerful for everyone to have access to, so we give access to a corporation that already has too much money, so they can monetize it and make more money?

In our upcoming paper, we use a children's picture book to explain how bizarre it is that ML researchers claim to measure "general" model capabilities with *data* benchmarks - artifacts that are inherently specific, contextualized and finite.
