Asked for an epidural after almost 24 hours of labor and the male anesthesiologist refused, telling me epidurals were a luxury and that women have been giving birth for thousands of years without it. And that, friends, is why we need more women in medicine.
@ShiversShana
I feel like this isn't talked about enough. Yes, epidurals can slow labor down. They can also help them progress. Why is it we only hear about the first part?
Well this took off. I'm going to be one of those ppl and say while you're here, check out

For anyone who might be giving birth soon: my nurses and doctor were rockstars. So was the anesthesiologist who replaced the rude one once his shift ended. Popped that epidural with a cheerful "easy peasy" and boosted it when I asked, no questions.
He was never a household name, but his research on one of the most flammable issues ever to arise in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints helped alter the course of the global faith.

In a global Relief Society devotional, an LDS leader said "There is no other religious organization in the world, that I know of, that has so broadly given power and authority to women.”

It really does beg the question -- how many pregnant people have suffered unnecessarily because this guy is scared of needles.
"As the cliché runs, 'If you don’t believe it, why don’t you just leave?'
The answer to that is easy: Those people don’t leave the church because religion isn’t just what you believe."

When I started reporting on LDS women who had had abortions, it never occurred to me I would encounter so many definitions of what an "abortion" is. I was so naïve.
