We broke down
@5SOS
’s new track Wildflower with
@Calum5SOS
and
@Luke5SOS
. We said their poppy guitars reminded us of Cyndi Lauper, but turns out they were inspired by Oasis! Take a listen here.

“Rather than trying to be boxed off into A or B, I’m going to make C and that is being third culture” —

his decision to take charge of his music
It’s time to take Britney seriously as one of the most influential pop artists of the 21st century, a vocal innovator, and someone who has shaped the sound of our modern soundtrack through hit after hit. ✨ Our four-part miniseries on Britney Spears begins this Tuesday!
As wildflower is slowing being released all over the world, man.... all we can say is this song is a Frankenstein of everything we love about music, we really hope you dig this one 🌸

We don't like when people treat artists as just popular commodities. Both artists are fabulous. But this statement is blatantly false and the streaming numbers prove it.
In this clip, Charlie and Nate explain how
@billieeilish
’s brother, producer
@finneas
edits and manipulates Billie’s voice to convey her complicated feelings! Take a listen:
When Nate taught “Call Me Maybe” as a case study in music theory, it inspired us to start this very podcast. Six years later, we finally talk to our muse

about Dedicated: Side B! Take a listen:
The duo

music is like a Rorschach test: everyone who listens to them describes and reacts to their Internet-core, off-the-wall songs differently. 🧵 (1/3)

@Kelis
for interpolating "Milkshake." Kelis expressed frustration for not being notified and says that the

stole her publishing on the song. The interpolated melody is a common Neptunes cliché also used on

"Nothin."
NEW EPISODE! On the the first episode of the four-part series Listening to Britney, we focus on Britney's voice in order to hear a pop icon with fresh ears. 👂
The iconic strings in Britney Spears’ “Toxic” were sampled from a song in the '80s Bollywood musical, "Ek Duuje Ke Liye.” Learn more about this connection with this video from Insider!
So, we have a book coming out in December. It breaks down eighteen pop hits, from 2000 to the present, and we had the time of our lives writing it. T Swift, André3000, CRJ, Queen Bey—they're all in here. Our publisher Oxford giving away 10 copies, check it out below!
Enter for your chance to win 1 of 10 copies of "Switched on Pop" from the
@SwitchedOnPop
team! Replete with engaging discussions and eye-catching illustrations, it brings to life the musical qualities that catapult songs into the pop pantheon.
Buried deep within the backing vocals in "Since U Been Gone," Dr. Luke layered his own voice in the mix. He screams at the top of his range, slightly out of tune. The track is mixed inaudibly low and serves no musical purpose, but we've heard the session stems and it's there.
one of the (many) cool things about "cardigan" is how the chord progression changes from the 1st chorus to the 2nd (and the reverts back in the 3rd). the effect might create a subtle shift in our perception of narrative time and distance
Guest
@jackantonoff
describes his "lightbulb" moment where the vision of
@bleachersmusic
’s new album Take the Sadness Out of Saturday Night became clear: while creating the song "What'd I Do With All This Faith."
Book B-Sides — Track 3: Zedd borrows chords from classical music to create heightened musical tension. Our favorite example is the “lifted” augmented chord that happens when Ariana sings “now that I’ve become who I really are” before bursting into the chorus of “Break Free.”
NEW EPISODE! Nu-Metal, the mid 90s creation that blended metal, rap and pop, is one of the most critically derided pop genres. But now it’s having a revival and women like
@rinasawayama
are leading the way:
We can’t believe the melody of
@lilnasx
’s Montero (Call Me By Your Name) came together in about 20 minutes. Our full interview with the record’s producers

Hey everyone we’re suprised to hear that

Billie Eilish has her first No. 1 hit with "Bad Guy." If you're not a member of Gen-Z, live under a rock, and have given up on new music, it's ok, we've got you. Billie Eilish... EXPLAINED!
In the late 90s, Max Martin mastered the complimentary chorus where two variations of the hook collide together into a final super chorus. It is all over Britney, N'Sync and The Backstreet Boys. This playlist features some of the best examples.
For their final assignment, students in my class attend a concert of their own choosing, then write a paper drawing connections between that concert's musical features and its underlying social values. This is one of the best intro paras I've ever seen:

Is no one else hearing that

"God Is A Woman" is an adaptation of

songs are getting shorter. But don't be alarmed, they used to be much, much shorter.
What can we infer?
- The phonograph set the pop song length ~3m
- Invention of the LP extended song lengths
- Radio format doesn't like songs >4:15m
- Streaming may effect song length
We're thrilled to announce that
@SwitchedonPop

@theweeknd
's record breaking "Blinding Lights."
@Seargee
@Beyonce
@kelis
@TheNeptunes
@noreaga
This statement is misleading. In pop music it is very common to have 3-5 people in the room writing a song. Later, other writers provide punch ups and revisions. Credits then get bloated by samples/interpolations, which ought to be called out separately.

Rocketman is a spectacle the size of Elton John himself. It's four films in one: a biopic, jukebox musical, addiction recovery story and a romance between friends. We speak with music producer Giles Martin about how the music ties it all together.
Beyoncé isn’t just the Black female artist with a country no. 1, she’s making explicitly Black country music. We break down the historical roots of her new singles and Reanna speaks with

Streaming has fundamentally changed the economics and sound of pop music:
- Songs are getting shorter
- Albums are getting longer
- Pop Overtures are replacing the intro

It turns out most of what we knew about Emo was wrong. It is much more than Converse, LiveJournal & generally being sad.
@LegsFrank
gave us a masterclass on this genre which has had a significant comeback in 2019.
Their music is a quilt of historically ridiculed genres, from nu-metal, to scuzz-rock, to ska, to 90s pop punk, and these genres fuse together to make wholly satisfying earworms. (2/3)
This is BIG news! Could not be more excited to have Reanna join the show. They are one of the most creative voices in music journalism. You’ll be hearing awesome stories from Reanna very soon.
