Imagine being Kokilaben and having one daughter-in-law washing laptops with soap water and the other taking the chana out of the cooker and placing the empty cooker on the burner. Completely on her side here.
We are proud of Kamala Harris' Indian roots but Sonia Gandhi is a foreigner and Rahul/Priyanka Gandhi should go back to Italy.
The breathtaking hypocrisy of this country.
Why would a Bengali tea stall owner declare free tea for Argentina? Because she can. Football is heartbreak and the purest of loves. (Image courtesy Sahebul Haque/Subhankar)

Just saw a Zee News clip where the anchor is asking a Bengali panelist to pronounce Rabindranath's surname correctly: "Thakur nahin, Tagore boliye. Unka naam toh thik se lijiye."
They took a good, kind man who had spent his entire life in the service of others, and killed him. Even that last hearing, when Father Stan begged to be allowed to return home to Ranchi - the court admitted that they could see how far gone he was, but they couldn't give him bail.
Firhad Hakim could have been arrested at any point since 2016, along with Mukul Roy and Subhendu Adhikari. To harass him now is to disrupt the entire Covid co-ordination and vaccination process in Kolkata.
Brinda Karat was not alone. It was an organized left delegation. Hannan Molla was there. Rajiv Kunwar was there. Ravi Rai of the CPI(ML) was there. And this is just the leadership. This absurd liberal take needs to end. 1/
Listen very closely. If you're surprised that hardworking Punjabi farmers are being branded Khalistani, it's because you were looking the other way when hardworking Bengali farmers and migrant workers were being branded illegal immigrants.
Not sure why people are so surprised about Durga idols being topical. They always have been. This is a WW II era Durga idol by the legendary Gopeshwar Pal (also responsible for warrior Durga/breaking away from the single frame). Note Mahishasura's moustache. [image - Ebela]
I've had students come up to me in tears after reading Phule and Bama. I've had students sit slack-jawed after reading Mahasweta Devi and Manto. You don't have to do much. It's how some things are. Classrooms can be transformative. That's why they scare some people.
It is impossible to explain how ghastly the flood situation in Assam is right now.
This should be the ONLY Assam headline right now. Everything else is a travesty.
Gandhi was, by no means, a leader without problems. But as a child of East Bengali refugees, I will never forget Gandhi in Noakhali, walking barefoot while riots ravaged Bengal.
We no longer make leaders who are willing to put their bodies on the line to douse the flames.
Daily COVID cases in Bengal spikes to 14,281. Ground-level journalists are doing an admirable job, as are doctors & nurses. But the spike was inevitable with the political leadership's insensitivity to human welfare & failure to do a nationwide lockdown on election rallies.
We could perhaps do with a little less cynicism on Twitter, if only to grasp the enormity of the sacrifices of the people who conducted this movement for a year. A year. 700 people dead. Entire villages rallying behind their farmers, relay sit-ins, pizza langars, gyms!
It was not uncommon for women to be heckled while going to college in the 19th century. Savitri Bai Phule herself withstood verbal and physical abuse.
Foolish to think Savitri Bai's daughters will not stand up to the same.
Zee News would like you to believe that a teenage activist from another country has orchestrated the largest farmer's movement I have witnessed in my life.
This is national television, yes. In a way I'm glad the world is getting a dose of the lunacy we are subjected to.
My friend was lying on the floor of BHU Covid ward for 2.5 hours at night, with not a single soul to attend to him. Later on, he paid 36k for two vials of Remdesivir. His roommate lost an eye to the fungus. When he came out, there was no wood in Manikarnika.
A few years ago, a profile started popping up in my friends' fb walls. The profile mostly engaged with left-wing workers or sympathizers and always had a lot to say. People argued with it all the time, myself included. The profile argued but never trolled.
Kamla Bhasin has passed. In the recent past, I have disagreed with her takes on some things, but her warmth, her energy, her generosity, her commitment to crossborder feminist solidarity in toxic S Asian contexts - this I will remember. Rest in power ma'am.
There seems to be a misunderstanding regarding why many of us have insisted on emphasizing on the Bengali identity of the residents of Jahangirpuri. It suggests a lack of understanding of the very long history of persecution of Bengali migrant workers as foreigners. 1/
It is imperative that every academic institution in India with Afghan students finds a way to accommodate them, and not abandon them in this desperate hour.
IITs like other higher educational institutions are now given loans via HEFA. Not grants. Loans must be repaid because not all of us are rich industrialists. Hence, fee hikes. Coming next at your university.
Just to be clear: Jahangirpuri has a migrant Bengali working class population, of which many are Muslim. This brand of xenophobia is not new in Delhi. It's now being trumpeted by Hindi media and all political parties in West Bengal are silent. Have you no shame?
This is today’s Dainik Jagran claiming that more than one lakh Bangladeshi infiltrators live in Jahangirpuri.
If true, the entire police establishment in that region ought to be sacked for gross incompetence.
If not, the worst kind of communal fear mongering from a newspaper
I enjoy it when people periodically try to school Subhashini Ali on Subhash Bose, only to discover that she is literally named after the man by her mother, who was also in the INA and the CPI(M)
Most partition refugees did not build their houses legally. They parked wherever they could. They grabbed land, settled on government and private property. You can see traces of it in Kolkata's refugee colonies even today, from Leningarh to Bijoygarh.
I am disgusted by journalists parachuting in from Delhi, talking glibly about "Hindu votes" and "Muslim votes" without an iota of criticism or addressing any fundamental issues of our lives. Your coverage is no less communal.
Every time a speaker speaks a sentence in English, Hindi speakers start demanding Hindi in unison. Had to actually put my foot down and point out that many of us, esp those from the south, signed up for a bilingual program.

It's still stolen wealth, that belongs to the miners who laboured in the diamond and emerald mines, to the people who owned these lands in the first place, to the artisans whose labour made those artefacts possible.
I have been watching, with quiet horror, what has been unfolding at the University of Delhi. A recruitment process that displaces 'ad hoc' faculty at will, never mind the years put in, 4 months at a time. Yes, 4 month contracts. 1/
Bless you, kiddo. (Caption: a sixth class kid places his pencil on his head and falls asleep at the mathematics festival at Chittagong, early in the morning; photo by Jewel Seal)

showed the same firmness in Assam. If only.
I appreciate that she is sticking to her guns in UP, but her party has just suspended Sherman Ali for simply narrating history that is unacceptable in dominant public discourse. It's unfortunate.
This one time in a dialogue with Gayatri Spivak, Romila Thapar talked about being the student selected to lower the Union Jack and raise the Tricolour in her school, in 1947. I think about it sometimes, the lives their generation led.
My grandfather was an ordinary worker of the CPI + IPTA. He lost his job in the historic P&T strike of 1946. In 1947, he became a refugee and sold peanuts at the maidan for 3 years. He did it for our freedom, not for 'bheekh' as some overpaid trolls might claim.
There are really grown men on this app getting off on calling a 37 yo actress 'a*unty' because it annoyed her. The extended adolescence of the Indian male is quite something to behold.
From the first cruelty, that of arresting a 83 year old man with advanced Parkinson's - to the denial of a sipper - to repeated medical negligence, refusal of bail in a pandemic... What did the courts think would happen? That he would miraculously become fine?
Please, be kind. Be kind to those disengaging and to those doomscrolling. Be kind especially to those who do not have the privilege of watching from afar but are living it, and may not be feeling very kind themselves.
Be kind to everyone except those in power.
They were there in front of the bulldozers because it's what they do, and because they have some organizational strength in Delhi.
That photograph of Brinda Karat is amazing and should be shared everywhere, but don't make this her personal crusade. Trust me, that's not it.
Deplorable attempts by some state governments to distract attention from their failures and spread panic among the people: Dr Harsh Vardhan, Union Health Minister

I don't know what my year was like. Many people I knew died. We spent days arranging for oxygen cylinders. I won't forget that horror as long as I live. I won't forgive the people responsible for it.

Father Stan would have believed in heavenly justice, right and wrong. I don't. But if there's such a thing as divine retribution, I hope the perpetrators pay.
Resident doctors across India to go on strike today to protest delay in NEET PG admissions. There have been no admissions in most med colleges across India for PG course for a year now. We call them Covid warriors and then make them hostage to reservation politics. Not done!
The left parties send organized delegations. That is their politics. The CPI(M) had sent an organized delegation yesterday as well. So have other parties and trade unions. Left parties did a joint fact-finding exercise. It was all over the news. 2/
A lot of the political commentators on this site were furious at Mr. Kharge for not handing a walkover to Mr. Tharoor. I hope they understand what an asset he is to his party.
Here's the thing that rankles, here's the part I must write down before I sleep - you've met a person with impairments courtesy Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, forms of dementia, haven't you? You parents or grandparents or elders. You've cared for them, wondered when your turn is.
The people of Bengal, Punjab and Assam can now be randomly harassed by the BSF if they live within 50 kms of the border.
The same BSF that has been caught red-handed involved in smuggling rings just recently.
Silence from the defenders of democracy.
The left parties are there during every demolition. Heard of Rangpuri Pahari or Kathputli Colony? Do you know why the Jahangir Puri settlements exist in the first place? (Hint: Emergency) 3/
Not a single member of this country's academic elite noticed when an arbitrary intervention led to the suspension of 13 Assistant Professors in Chapra. A few voices of disquiet noticed the churning in VBU, but that's about it. Today you speak of PBM and Ashoka.
Someone pointed this out yesterday, and they're absolutely right - there's no reason to not replace the hand-pulled rickshaws in parts of Kolkata with battery-operated ones except poverty aesthetics.
If a leaf is dislodged in DU/JNU/Ashoka, Pratap Bhanu Mehta shows up to write an op-ed. Apoorvanand delivers lectures on the idea of the university. Mukul Kesavan writes a column. The same courtesy is not extended to the AUDFA strike let alone other state unis.

Er, since this is viral now, please consider supporting the Cheruia Public Library in Balia, UP, which is doing some important community work for young people.
Milkha Singh was born in 1929, 10 years after Jallianwala Bagh. Bhagat Singh was executed in 1931.
Milkha Singh was born in present day Pakistan and lost his family to Partition violence, which he witnessed. He also spent time in a refugee camp.
