How can network science help us better evaluate what an LLM "knows" and what it does not "know?" If you're attending @NeurIPSConf, you can learn the answer from one of our amazing @Experiential_AI masters students, @RushaliMohbe, at the @WiMLworkshop poster session!

Models of how things spread often assume that transmission mechanisms are fixed over time. However, social contagions--the spread of ideas, beliefs, innovations--can lose or gain in momentum as...

This is what great public health looks like! If you detect H5 in the wastewater, figure out where it came from!
The Los Angeles County Department is investigating possible sources of H5 bird flu, which has been detected at one of the county's wastewater sampling sites. "There are no reports of human H5N1 cases in Los Angeles County and the overall risk [...] to residents remains low"

The pattern stays the same: close contact with animals and mild presentation. Good that the testing of humans seems to be done more consistently. But with winter season coming, not a comfortable situation. Intense surveillance needed
NEW: U.S. reports 7 more human cases of H5N1 bird flu, including 3 in California and 3 in Washington

Abstract. Human mobility is strongly associated with the spread of SARS-CoV-2 via air travel on an international scale and with population mixing and the n
Our latest preprint explores the routes of importation of SARS-CoV-2 variants into Chile during 2021 by integrating genomic and human mobility data, a fantastic interdisciplinary collaboration sparked by @leoferres and colleagues at @ispch

The last influenza pandemic we had--the 2009 pandemic--likely went from pigs to humans. Here's a famous paper by Robert Webster on the pigs as "mixing vessel" for avian/human influenza viruses hypothesis:
This is an unsurprising, but worrisome development. Pigs have long been thought of as a stepping stone in evolutionary process that influenza viruses take to adapt from infecting birds to humans.

Emails reveal gaping holes in surveillance for human bird flu infections. “I have been distressed and depressed by the lack of epidemiologic data and the lack of surveillance,” says a former head @ASPRgov. My latest @sfchronicle @KFFHealthNews gift link https://t.co/RA70j7fRbg

Great that Quest will (at some point) roll out H5 bird flu tests. But seeing as a slow test rollout was perhaps the biggest failure in Covid, why didn't the CDC & FDA push for this to happen sooner? Like back in June, when CDC said it mattered. ICYMI

I’m really glad to see this. Clinicians should easily be able to test their patients for H5 specifically.
Exciting news! Thrilled to see @questdiag launching an #H5N1 #birdflu test just in time for respiratory virus season. It’ll be crucial to know their testing capacity and turnaround time for results. @RickABright @michaelmina_lab @JenniferNuzzo
