New from Anya Schultz, who analyzed financial records to track PTA 'dark money' in SFUSD. Elementaries in the Bayview haven’t raised a single dollar in the past five years. Elementaries in the Marina raised more than $5.2 million in the same period.

The city is home to some of California's biggest PTA fundraisers. Faced with new rules, the wealthy may flee SFUSD altogether.

THE END OF THE WEST has won the J. Anthony Lukas Work-in-Progress Award. Totally thrilling and slightly anti-climactic, because you can't read the book yet. But this will be key to heaving it over the finish line.

Fire size is also a function of the legacy of full fire suppression in California. I would love to see us stop using acreage as a yardstick for climate change. We need to burn a little on every best day or it all burns on the worst days.

Until we fundamentally shift from treating fire risk as a private property issue to a shared collective hazard, we can’t begin to face our modern wildfire problems.

Zone zero is great as a first step toward the tens of billions in retrofitting California has to do in WUI communities. Now let’s talk about the massive funded apparatus and community buy-in needed to actually enforce it.
