The BBC’s departure from a commitment to political balance, continually leaning to the right, is a growing concern. Last night’s Question Time. Tonight’s panel on Newsnight. Kuennsberg and Mason. Progressive voices treated as idiosyncratic oddities. We all pay the licence fee.

I’ve weighed in via @unherd on the BBC’s latest history offerings, with praise for A. J. P. Taylor, 1960s documentaries about Coventry, and @TheRestHistory

The news that BBC Factual has announced five new history commissions has not been met with unalloyed approbation. Viewers are to be treated to documentaries on Idi Amin, Islamic State, and the life...

You can’t be an effective party for successful people in midlife (sort of the *point* of the Tory party ultimately) if you are at odds with them over the most consequential thing you did in office. This week’s column:

The party can’t keep expecting successful people to pretend that leaving the EU was a good idea

The right wing bias of these @BBCNewsnight panels is quite something…smart insiders in despair too. ..only hope is that the discussions are so short no one can say anything that can make a mark.
What an appalling episode of Newsnight that was. No “news”, just a bunch of mainly rightwing talking heads (poor Richard Bacon isolated) invited on to reel off pub bore takes about news. Time this wretched programme was axed, content like this can only make people less informed

Wilson winning a tiny majority on epic challenges ahead…Is current crisis even more severe? No north sea oil about to appear ( lucky Thatcher..who wasted much of the revenue) ..and out of Europe.
#OTD 1974. Election. Winning a majority of 3, Harold Wilson says “Britain faces the gravest economic crisis since the war. He says the next two years will be a “hard slog” for the British people dealing with cost of living, an energy crisis, trade with Europe and unemployment.

Kemi Badenoch is a good speaker.. much better that Robert Jenrick…The contents of her speech convey an underlying panic triggered by the terrible polls and Reform.. but she looked relaxed ..her laughter that punctuated the speech felt natural. Being a good speaker matters a lot

In his 90s Michael Heseltine is the great Tory moderniser.. They should make him leader:
“You described Reform and other parties across Europe today as among the 'right wing equivalents of the fascists in the 1930s'. Why?” “Because that’s what they are.” @vicderbyshire asks Lord Heseltine about remarks he made at Conservative Party Conference. #Newsnight

The BBC would never do this to a leader on the right… they’d be too frightened of a Daily Mail front page etc.
I'm Jewish. I'm also Mancunian. Every other national party leader was interviewed by Laura Kuenssberg during their conference. Maybe the BBC thought as someone who also supports Palestine - I had nothing to say? Let's keep growing: https://t.co/Q27Jy5fuX7
