My thoughts on #fish #passes on #mahseer #rivers today in The Ecologist. #dam building v #ecosystem #services is the theme; lack of width in impact assessment is one of the issues. For sure: increasingly costly #HEP is not #green #energy. https://t.co/dhDlrB1qGc

Lockdown dam development webinars in Himalayan regions have been recruiting fish conservationists as specialist speakers.

"Often the result is accurate. Usually it is convincing. It can also be garbage." My experience: @rafaelbehr has this the wrong way round. Every day I'm shocked at AI inaccuracy. Truly shocked by AI rubbish disguised as "help". https://t.co/IYoEVqEwLz

If only I could remember what Biju Kumar said to me to cause that reaction ๐ค #OneHealth approach for wetland monitoring was an eye-opener for me. Great to find new pathways, novel support across disciplines to improve freshwater research & then share the results. #TellTheStory

The Ukraine "peace plan" is quite an eye-opener. Who would have thought that the USA would openly side with a repressive regime engaged in acts of aggression against NATO partners like the UK & Poland. No need to worry about Ukraine joining NATO, the USA just called time on it...

"Instead of making space for rivers to swell to carry rainwater, riverfront projects concretise riverbanks & constrict them...harms long-term water security, river health, and its ability to carry floodwater." Yet still building goes on ๐คฆ @JamwalNidhi ๐๐ผ https://t.co/HlWzyb0F7r

What do we do when rivers run dry? How do we face a future of rivers overwhelmed? Unpredictable rainfall is giving us plenty of opportunity to study both... Research information in @Indian_Rivers post ๐๐ผ โค๏ธ #YourLocalRiver

-In the past 6 yrs only about 1/3rd of the global river catchment area had normal discharge conditions compared to the 1991-2020 average. This means that 2/3rds have too much or too little water โ reflecting the increasingly erratic hydrological cycle.

Two very important points raised by @nehaa_sinha for @NewIndianXpress: โข What we may consider "wasteland" is home to others. โข Scavengers perform valuable ecological services. A succinct article taking us to tough places & asking us to care for the troubled hyena. #EnergyCycle

Love this story from Meghalaya. It reminds me that it is one of very few states of India I have still not visited. One day I will visit & look at the beautiful rivers there & continue to increase my understanding of the regions of the mighty mahseer. https://t.co/0ZEMRqk4qK

Had a great day today with the @whatacatchtv crew at @NHM_London. We covered a lot of ground; most importantly the value of collections to modern science & conservation. I also covered a lot of ground walking from Euston to Kensington in morn then Traf Sq to Kensington in eve ๐
Thank you to Steve Lockett of the Mahseer Trust and the National Museum of London for a thrill of a lifetime. #Nationalhistorymuseum

When geology cannot accurately date a cave system, try the evolutionary genomics of a cave fish! Great little story from the Ozarks on the value of understanding the lineage of a freshwater fish species. The eyes have it...or not ๐ Link in post ๐๐ผ
