News & Views from Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall & his team on Hugh’s advocacy, environmental & charity work - conservation, waste, food, farming & public health.
Anyone else been spending time this weekend desperately hoping for breaking news, or some gaffe, tweet or meme that unambiguously reveals to all just what a disaster it would be to hand Boris Johnson a majority on Thursday?
I’m voting in the Honiton and Tiverton by-election today. And I’m afraid I’m going to break a pledge I made a year ago, when I joined the Green Party. I said I was fed up of voting tactically and made a commitment to vote Green at every opportunity. ⬇️
So
@Tesco
say that they could remove plastic packaging tomorrow if it was the right thing to do. I think it’s the right thing to do. I reckon
@itsanitarani
thinks it’s the right thing to do. What do YOU think?

#OurPlasticFeedback
And so, with apologies to my friends in the Green Party, of which I remain proud to be a member, today I will be voting for the Lib Dems. I will not feel as good or as honest as I would voting green. But in a contest that could well go to the wire, I feel it’s what I have to do.
The wrongest thing about Boris’
#LoveActually
broadcast (apart from every single bit of it) is the suggestion that a hung parliament would be some kind of disaster, when right now it’s probably the best way to avert one, to head off extremism, and spread a bit of love, actually.
The people of Welwyn Hatfield, constituency of so-called Net Zero minister
@grantshapps
, are waking up to these posters, which I pasted up in the small hours of the morning. If you agree with the message, please spread as widely as possible!
#climatefight
#onshorewind
This is ABSURD. Solar power is rightly popular w/ the public who understand that it provides cheap, homegrown energy that brings down people’s bills. And solar SUPPORTS food production – providing a stable income for farmers helping them stay in business.
I completely agree with
@DaleVince
and
@ChrisGPackham
👇🏼Sunak has doubled down on fossil fuels to make his mates in the industry richer while the rest of us go to hell. No doubt he hopes they’ll pay to rebuild his party when we vote them out next year. Let's never have them back!
Sunak is breathtakingly dishonest. From his shameless claim that Starmer’s policy to stop drilling in the North Sea (entirely as per international scientific & political consensus) was bought by donations from an environmentalist, to his claims that his own rogue policies to…
It’s going to be very tight, but if we can unseat the Tories here today we can, in a small but not insignificant way, shift the dial towards a progressive alliance and perhaps ultimately a more representative democracy. ⬇️
It’s the height of the British apple season and without doubt one of the best harvests in years. So why does the
@marksandspencer
food concession in Bristol Temple Meads station only sell apples from New Zealand and South Africa?
Some even bigger posters up in London now... 👀
And it's clear from talking to the constituents of Welwyn Hatfield earlier today that they don't have much time for their MP
@grantshapps
and his (almost non-existent) climate policy
#ClimateActionNow
#ClimateFight
#onshorewind
Yes, the brilliant people of Exeter were 100% clear that the ghastly Rwanda deportation plan has no place in our society. Leaves
@RishiSunak
short on his 5 pledges. How about replacing it with some real leadership on climate?
@grantshapps
@SuellaBraverman
@ChiefExecCCC
Bloody hell!! A moment.
Fiona Bruce “ Even though the majority of you voted Conservative…do any of you support the Rwanda policy?”
Not a single hand up…silence 👀
Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall “ Good on you!”

It's a shame that Iceland’s ad about
#PalmOil
has been banned from TV for being “political”. Concern for the planet isn’t political, it’s
#ethical
! You won't see it on TV this Christmas, but you can see it here:
In the simple and compelling words of Sir David Attenborough, “Dear Supermarkets, for the sake of the planet, less plastic please!

PM Rishi Sunak confirms ban on sales of new petrol and diesel cars in the UK will be delayed until 2035
I simply wanted my green vote to be counted, even when I knew I couldn’t really make it count.
A system where one million General Election votes gets the Tories 20 MPs but the Greens only 1 is a grossly unfair system. ⬇️
I am so very sad to say that our dearest friend Nick Fisher has passed away. He was always full of insight and compassion, which is what made him such a great writer and broadcaster, as well as a brilliant friend. His lovely family and his many friends are missing him terribly.
At
@Waitrose
to see their “unpacked” trial to remove & reduce
#plastic
from our supermarket shop - really impressive. Met lots of happy shoppers who say this is what they want. Is this the future? Only if we get on board - & pressure the supermarkets to do the same.

I 💚
@GreenpeaceUK
, especially when they do this kind of stuff. Perhaps they could also fill up his swimming pool with oil. He seems to love the stuff so much, I'm sure he'd enjoy wallowing in it.
.
@MattHancock
I welcome the gov’s obesity strategy to fight this epidemic, protect our children and help save our NHS. Let’s make sure that bold proposals become BOLD ACTIONS. I’ll be watching.
#BritainsFatFight
So unfair that there are times when the opportunity to “game it to change it” becomes almost impossible to resist. Today I have such an opportunity, a chance to cast a vote that might actually have an impact on that system. ⬇️
I’d just like to suggest that every journalist interviewing any Tory minister on any platform for the next week should ask them whether they think their party should give Mr Hester his £10m pounds back.
#Hester
It’s great to celebrate the breathtaking beauty of British wildlife. But to pull the episode that explains that much of it is under threat makes the whole series impotent as a force for good. I bet SDA isn’t happy and we deserve better from
@BBC
, a public service broadcaster.
1/4 I never thought I would be using social media for this, but my very dearest friend Nick Fisher, who some of you will know from his journalism and telly work, has gone missing.
Like Trump before him, only more so, Boris LOST the popular vote. Over 56 per cent of votes went against the Tories. Yet they have huge majority. Only a fair electoral system can give us a just society. But a tragically small chance of getting it in the next 5 years.
Every day, destructive fishing vessels destroy miles upon miles of ecosystem in so-called protected UK waters, while the government stands by and lets it happen. (1/2)

NOW!
Shockingly, the UK is one of the most nature-depleted countries in the world.
We need to send the UK Gov
@10DowningStreet
@RishiSunak
a clear signal that nature restoration must happen—and must happen NOW. We need to stand united for nature.
It’s estimated that we spend around £60M pounds a year on bottled water in plastic stations. Who’s up for joining the
#RefillOntheRoad
revolution?
#WarOnPlastic
@Refill
A year after I asked
@KelloggsUK
to step up and adopt traffic lights on their breakfast cereals they have actually done it! 🚦 Such brilliant news, this will make it easier for parents to make healthier and informed choices. H x

We managed to germinate an acorn and it’s just sprouted its first leaves. We’ll grow it on and plant it out, and hope that one day someone will love swinging from its branches. Just as my daughter does from the oak beneath which she found this little acorn...
It's amazing to hear about all the changes so many of you are making to reduce the amount of
#plastic
in your lives. But who feels like we need help from big business too? And fast?
#WarOnPlastic
#plasticpollution
Briefly in beautiful Brighton-great to be among folk with guts/vision to reject false promises of the major parties and elect brilliant
@CarolineLucas
for
@TheGreenParty
A rare politician putting constituents/principles above personal gain/vested interests. We need more like her!
Boris mate. THREE plastic bottles? Surely a clean glass is available for your water at the new gaff? And a filter machine and mug for your coffee? Or use some of the £39bn we apparently save from a no deal Brexit and hire your own personal barista. And get your feet off the table
.
@CocaCola
it’s NOT your privilege to redefine
#singleuse
. ALL your drinks bottles are single use, whether they get recycled or not. And
@smartwater
isn’t smart. Carrying a refill bottle is smart. And drinking free tap water instead of sugary drinks is even smarter!
#WarOnPlastic
Shocking story from
@itvnews
: Supermarkets
@IcelandFoods
,
@LidlGB
and
@asda
selling products from a Polish chicken farm, illegally laced with antibiotics. This fuels anti-b resistance and causes fatal outbreaks of e-coli. Leave these products alone til they get their acts together
A pleasure to be invited onto
@bbclaurak
to point out the government's woeful track record on climate and stress the urgency and opportunity of lifting the ban on onshore wind. And what a treat to meet legend
#TimothySpall

sounds fantastic!
#EnergyBill
Fantastic news from
@itsanitarani
that Burger King have stopped distributing plastic toys with kids meals. It sounds like Ella and Caitlin and their petition played more than a small part! Congratulations all!
Such a great move that no
#plastic
drinks bottles are on sale at
@glastofest
& the
#refill
alternative is working. That’s hundreds of thousands of plastic bottles saved &, let’s hope, a sign that water refill everywhere will soon be the new normal.

If we’re going to bring about the change that our planet needs, we’re going to need to make our voices heard. Our supermarkets always say that they value our feedback, so let’s take them up on it! Hi supermarkets, this is
#OURPLASTICFEEDBACK

#WarOnPlastic
This a shocking and very important article by
@GeorgeMonbiot
. Climate activists are being sent to jail without a chance to defend their actions. We must find ways to support them!
Big question: is lockdown helping wildlife to thrive this year, or am I just paying more attention and noticing the stunning flowers and insects all around me? Either way it’s life-changing. We have to take better care of this stuff. It’s what takes care of us.
#30dayswild
Look at how much plastic tat there is in these kids mags! Does anyone else find this alarming? Where is it all going to end up?! You’d think that CBeebies at least might know better. Being Blue Planet's little baby cousin...

I’m on the train to London to join
@ChrisGPackham
and co at the
#RestoreNatureNow
rally at
@defragovuk
HQ (Great Peter St) as this govt is abjectly failing to protect nature in our land/rivers/seas. links 👇🏼to find out more - join us if you possibly can!
#WildIsles
, wow! Stunning footage of amazing UK wildlife. A few refs to declining numbers and habitats and a plea from SDA for nature restoration. But how has our biodiversity crisis happened - 70 yrs of chemical farming, and a decade of anti-nature govt? Time for change!
Hey
@GordonRamsay
. It’s your old mate Hugh here. Apparently they are giving these away at
@HeathrowAirport
right now. Surely that’s the wrong direction of travel. You know they have over 100 water fountains there now?

@BorisJohnson

I’m really enjoying all the

Having a great time at the
#Edinburgh
Festival, but it’s a

#edfringe2019
Dear
@michaelgove
@grantshapps
, it's time to lift the
#onshorewind
ban in England - it has the power to address
#climatechange
, help the UK meet its net zero targets, and give us all greener, cheaper electricity. And it’s not just me that thinks so. ⬇️ ✍🏼
Together, for the health of our planet and all the wonderful life it supports, and for the quality of our own lives and our children's lives, we need to end the
#plastic
nightmare.
#WarOnPlastic
#PlasticPollution
I haven’t always seen eye to eye with
@jayrayner1
on poultry welfare. But totally agree- the “no brainer” is keeping American mass/produced chicken - cruelly farmed & chlorine rinsed - out of the UK. One of many potential food perils of post Brexit Britain.
.
@michaelgove
never mind the marching powders Michael, how about some Class A policies on plastic. Sort our bust recycling, give us a deposit return scheme on ALL plastic bottles and make the polluter pay 100% under new Extended Producer Responsibility legislation
#WarOnPlastic
Gary Rhodes was an amazing chef and led the charge for British cooking. Eating at the Greenhouse when he was in the kitchen in the nineties was a life-changing experience for me and many other chefs, and his TV shows inspired millions. We salute you, Gary, and we’ll miss you.
Of all the environmental issues, soil is one of the most misunderstood and the most neglected. This is a huge problem, given its vital importance - for food security, safe water supply, carbon storage and indeed for all life on earth!🌱🌎 (1/3)
.
@MichaelGove
agrees that this situation is horrendous, but what is he actually doing about it?! How about: sort our recycling, a deposit return scheme on ALL
#plasticbottles
& make the polluter pay 100% under new Extended Producer Responsibility legislation.
#WarOnPlastic
Oh come on please! When will this government face up to the fact that we have a climate crisis and a nature crisis and actually give us the policies that can make a difference?
@DefraGovUK
4/4 We are desperate to find him and if you have seen anything at all that could help us please call 101 and quote the case number 15:644. I’m also posting the appeal from the local news website with a picture of Nick.
YES
@itsanitarani
! It’s time that our Supermarkets did something bold & gave us a chance to shop WITHOUT single use plastic! We know that it can be done, there are plenty of shops, greengrocers and even some supermarkets giving it a go, so what are we waiting for?!
#WarOnPlastic
Two problems: runaway climate change, a mass of species extinctions. One solution: restoring ecosystems. It's really that simple. Simple doesn’t mean easy – but we have to do this. Our survival depends on it.
#naturalclimatesolutions
#theforgottensolution
If you want to hear how we solve the

@ExtinctionR
are not criminals any more than suffragettes were.They operate within the tradition of civil disobedience that has a record of getting stuff done.Calling on us to shun them as criminals is government’s cowardly distraction from actually addressing the climate crisis.
I don’t want to stop eating
#fish
I want
@michaelgove
to DO something to protect our

. Getting scallop dredgers and beam trawlers out of our

Protected Areas and enforcing the

would be a start.
@jamieoliver
So sorry to hear this Jamie. You and your amazingly talented team have achieved so much, boosting healthy eating and higher farm animal welfare standards. All those you’ve trained will go on to make a difference.
Today is
#EarthDay
and here is a short clip I’ve made. We’ve all got a lot on our minds - C19 is a huge global challenge - but there’s still an even bigger picture out there: our planet, and it’s future. Thinking about that is what Earth Day is for... 💚🌍
