As we mark 1 mill. Covid deaths this weekend, we launched a new dashboard that delivers a hard truth: about every second person who died from Covid-19 since vaccines became available could have been saved by – yes, vaccines. A 🧵about data, people & trust https://t.co/tzhd6fxXB5

A large share of the nearly 1 million people who died of COVID in the U.S. may have lived if they'd gotten vaccinated. A new analysis shows how many lives could have been saved across the country.

The people now in charge of the Office of Personnel Management apparently don’t know how to scrub PDF metadata, and have exposed the original authors of the guidance they’re publishing. Two, Noah Peters and James Sherk, have links to the Heritage Foundation and Project 2025.

“We often think about [conspiracies] as a conservative problem, but it is really a human problem,” Friedhoff said. [...] Creating stories out of [uncertainty, fear or] a lack of information “is just part of how our brain works and how our cognitive biases work." 6/6

“What happened after the hurricanes was comparable to that in that the community was mourning and responding and trying to figure out what to do,” Friedhoff said. “And the country was having these conspiracy theories circling around which were very much about the election...” 5/

When a school shooting happens, we find that the affected community, dealing with the reality of the tragedy, often has a very different conversation from the rest of the country. The community is mourning, and the rest of the country is having a fight over gun laws. 4/

One thing I have been thinking about a lot since the outburst of new conspiracies after hurricanes Helene and Milton is that we saw a similar pattern to what happens after school shootings. 3/

“In isolation, conspiracy theories can look outlandish. It’s easier to understand them in light of how they were built over time,” Friedhoff said. “This is a cascading process where you are gradually getting used to things that are increasingly removed from reality.” 2/

“One reason why people cannot agree on a common set of facts is that they do not live in the same information realities.” It has taken years to get here and, “we are moving farther and farther away from one another.” Example: How we view today's election results. 1/

Great piece by @sarahellison about the conspirational mindset that thrives in our chaotic, manipulated information spaces. The article shares a few of the insights I've gained this election season so here're some highlights 🧵

Conspiracy theories, which played a role in the US election, are symptoms of a larger problem says Professor @stef_friedhoff of @IFL_Brown: "People cannot agree on a common set of facts (because) they do not live in the same information realities."

On the final panel of the day, @stef_friedhoff talks about the importance of communicating uncertainty as part of public communications during outbreaks. And the importance of sharing evidence for the public health action taken during that period of uncertainty. #h5n1
