When I talk about scams, I oft get replies like "the TV licence is a scam too" or "not putting up income tax thresholds is a scam" & more. I get this is venting, but it risks inuring people to the danger of actual scams. Scams and fraud make up 40% of UK crime Its

@MartinSLewis Had to go to the bank with my elderly mother yesterday. She'd been watching Scam interceptors. She'd received a scam call and hung up. She was so proud of little herself that she was telling all the bank staff and anyone else who would listen.

Yes you read that right. The cyber crime force in Karachi raided a scam call centre and found that the two guys running it worked for them. From an enforcement perspective, the fight against international, industrialised scamming just isn’t one we can win

Should you ever want to understand why a lot of the information #ScamInterceptors report to the relevant authorities goes, shall we say “unnoticed”, this might be a good indicator: https://t.co/K32c6IbOd9

FIA Cybercrime Reporting Center recently raided an illegal call center located in Defence Phase II, Karachi.

Huge thanks to the Scam Interceptors team for having us today. So alarming seeing the criminal call centres working on an industrial scale and their ruthless tactics, but good to see the work being done to try to stop them.

Please do engage with what’s out there and protect yourself. It’s never been more important. To that end - I’ll be on @BBCRadioScot very shortly talking about it all…

The BBC’s brilliant #ScamSafe Week starts in earnest today with a massive amount of work across the organisation. I’m so glad the BBC is leading the way on this. There’s tons inc Morning Live, Scam Interceptors (twice today!), Radio 1 & Eastenders…and those are just my bits!

I clearly can’t keep track of what the schedulers have planned for @BBCOne. Absolutely baffling. Apparently we aren’t on today despite every previous series having been at the same time every weekday all week when there’s new episodes out 🤷♂️😂
#ScamInterceptors back on your screens at 14.00 today on @BBCOne with a new episode, and honestly one of the most frustrating, intense chases we've ever had. We do so many interceptions I rarely remember individual cases. But I remember this one.

Or, the huge numbers of British scammers for that matter, with their lovely English accents? If you really think you can protect yourself from scams with a racist assumption about people's voices, I've got news for you: you can't. It's nowhere near that easy. Stop it.

So: NO, you can't just assume anyone calling you with an Indian accent is a scammer. What a ridiculous thing to say. What about the legit customer support handled there? Or all those in the UK or USA working perfectly normal jobs who just happen to have an Indian accent?

India has a massive, thriving legit tech industry and BPO (business process outsourcing) industry. There are many millions of Indians doing phone calls dealing with your travel issues, banking, offering website support etc. It is the most populous country on earth after all.

Why? They created the idea in the minds of Western consumers that a call from south Asia about a customer support issue could be legit. And there is still a HUGE volume of legit business being handled by customer support agents in India which serves to muddy the water further
