New paper online! In 2018, we found a human brain signal that tracks real time fluctuations in mood/anxiety. Now Adam Jackson back-translates this biomarker to mice, dissects its circuit mechanisms, & tests its causal relationship to emotional state. 🧵1/6

Excited to see this in print this morning, coincidentally on the lab's birthday! Here we tackle the question of how the PFC multiplexes social and contextual information using overlapping ensembles of neurons.

I’m excited to share a new paper from the lab. The study led by Xiaowei Gu reveals how the mPFC encodes complex emotional memories, using an internal model to infer emotional associations and memories via projections to the amygdala https://t.co/zkhSD98GlD https://t.co/dgNBPSNj5l

Finally, lithium treatment, which we previously found rescues synaptic and behavioral abnormalities in Tbr1 cKO mice, also seems to reverse at least some of the observed abnormalities in neural activity. 4/n

Similar to our prior finding in Shank3 KO mice, multineuron coordination in social ensembles is diminished by Tbr1 cKO. The inability of neurons to act synergistically & encode social information via correlated activity may be a convergent feature of diverse autism models. 3/n

Using neural networks, we found PFC social ensembles that undergo re- (and pre-) activation, plus ensembles which predict approach/avoidance decisions. These signals are all lost in Tbr1 cKO mice. 2/n
