Our "weird oxygen production" paper is finally out! The polymetallic nodule-covered seafloor is making oxygen. We don't know exactly how - lots of fun work ahead! - but a new source of O2 may help fuel the deep-sea biosphere. 👏 to @ProfAKSweetman for leading the charge 👏

An unpopular insight from science (as is climate change), which should not be dismissed just because it’s unpleasant: Long COVID puzzle pieces are falling into place – the picture is unsettling https://t.co/3ggmY5tSqG

I’ve been fortunate enough to have some time to stand back and reflect on the state of the field of post-acute infection syndromes(PAIS)/infection associated chronic conditions (IACC) such as #LongCOVID, #MECFS and chronic #Lyme and I wanted to share some opinions. Before I 1/

Positive mindset is not a valid treatment for #LongCovid. It’s a way to cope with LongCovid. Two points: -Targeted chemo still works on grumpy people. - Our attitude didn’t make us sick, a virus did. We need targeted pharmaceutical TREATMENT #PhysicianPatient

Interesting! 🇳🇱 Hypothesis-generating paper with small sample. Hypothesis: increased (30H-)anthranilic acid ⬇️ IDO2 expression in PBMCs ⬇️ mitochondrial dysfunction in those cells & increased autophagy (but not apoptosis) https://t.co/WCrBxKnkff

More background: not taking any supplements right now besides daily Vit D3 (20ug), weekly B12, and daily cetirizine (allergy related). Did occasionally smoke in the past so nicotine isn't completely new to me, which is why I didn't start with half a patch (that's the suggestion).

Started with 7mg and planned to take it off for the first night, but then I didn't. Sleep wasn't great but not horrible either. No nausea so far, feeling ok this morning with day 2 of #TheNicotineTest.

First observations: patch application this morning was a bit fiddly (edges didn't glue very well). Brain fog lifted initially but is back right now. No side effects or effect on muscle pain yet. #TheNicotineTest

Joined @TheNicotineTest today, self-testing the hypothesis that low dose nicotine patches can help with #LongCovid recovery. Details in the hypothesis paper by @LeitzkeMarco https://t.co/ZEeUKUkXdL.

Doesn't correlate with #LongCovid symptoms so far. Past days were pretty bad without concerning lactate values (brain fog, muscle pain). Let's see what the next days will bring, it's only a few days for now and no trend.

first few days of #theacidtest: only one measurement >2, i.e. no really concerning values. Filled circles 1h after breakfast, empty ones after waking. Method is not very robust though, remeasured the high value twice (with new lancets) and it turned out much lower.

First data point, after coffee (protocol says after waking) and some technical issues that delayed the measurement: 1.4 mmol/L LAC 3/X

Simplified hypothesis: covid fucked up the blood circulation, cell metabolism shifting to anaerobic at rest. Lactate builds up, which should be visible in capillary blood, which can be measured at home (mostly used by athletes). [long read: https://t.co/nvVTHlJPvi] 2/X

Will share some lactate measurements in the coming 2-3 weeks doing #theacidtest which is especially exciting for someone who loves to be in the lab doing experiments but it's still mostly housebound due to long covid. 1/X
