Interesting! Google is labelling some reviews as "Incentivized" - it's against Google's terms to incentivize reviews, so I'm unsure if this is suspected incentivization, or Google's solution for dinging policy-violating reviews while still providing desired consumer info.

It has reached a point where Reddit's listings in the organic search results and AI overviews need to be tagged "sponsored". Are you paying attention, @FTC? This is also arguably reducing the quality of Google's overall search.
Deepen? Oh boy... -> Reddit is in early talks with Google to deepen the integration of its content into Google's AI products; they signed a $60M data-sharing deal in 2024 "Reddit wants more users and more money from Google in exchange for an even bigger mountain of data feeding

While they might not care that this was facilitating rank tracking tools, there are also other uses beyond search marketing for that data facilitated by this. Generally, introducing changes in such an ecosystem without a prior announcement is unnecessarily disruptive.

Instead, Google's statement makes it almost sound like this was an off-label setting or a hack that they long tolerated or only just got around to removing. Also, major changes to the search results pages really ought to be disclosed ahead of time with a sunsetting announcement.

Google's statement is a bit unsatisfying in context of their history. The ability to view up to 100 listings per results page was overtly enabled by Google through custom search settings for a great many years. They should've acknowledged that in a statement about the change.
Google's statement (a week later) on removing 100 results parameter functionality, killing the tool providers and revealing some interesting data in Search Console - story updated at https://t.co/FOz67Q9iU0
