So ecstatic to match at VANDERBILT for General Surgery!!! I couldn’t have made it here without my mentors, family, and friends - it really does take a village. Next stop - NASHVILLE!
@VUMCSurgRes
To be rotating at an institution where my attending takes the time to explain every step he’s taking in the OR, talk through patient cases and explain the pathophysiology while simultaneously asking me questions and making sure I’m following along, is the greatest privilege.
I love getting M1s/M2s involved in my ongoing research projects. I remember being an M1 terrified to get involved with research because it was so new to me. Without my mentors, I wouldn’t be here. I’m so glad I can give back the mentorship I have received.
Being a Sub-I in the SICU after having virtually no ICU experience as an M3 is incredibly difficult. Medicine is humbling. Does anyone have any good resources I can use to learn more/improve?

I can’t wait for residency. I know it’s hard, long hours, overwhelming, and all the things - but I’m still so excited to finally be a surgeon in training, to carry patients from admission to d/c, be part of the team 🤩 it’s gonna be a great time
My family cant comprehend why Monday is only IF and not WHERE and honestly, I really wish I could 2x speed these next 5 days bc I can’t keep having this convo
So thankful I get to spend a month at Vanderbilt with
@VUMCSurgRes
in the Surgical ICU! It’s been a week in Nashville so far, and absolutely love my resident team already 🤩
Just finished Step 2CK, and I’m so excited to start my first surgery sub-I in Colorectal Surgery at
@GUMedicine
Any advice or helpful resources to prepare would be much appreciated!
My little sister, who knows I’m interested in colorectal surgery (vs surg onc), just told me not to embarrass her in front of her friends. And when I asked how I could possibly do that, she said “don’t talk about poop okay?”
Does she think that’s all I talk about all day? 😫
Absolutely love Trauma/Surgical Critical Care. My time in surgery so far has been in various surgical oncology heavy fields. This is my first rotation (as an acting intern) rotating in the Surgical ICU. Vanderbilt has been nothing short of incredible.

Please allow me,
@BrooketheOstomy
’s residency PD & trauma surgeon who is friends with a number of fellowship PD at many of the TOP programs in the country, to reassure that we HAVEN’T “talked” & this is such bs. 😡 she’s amazing & I’ll be writing an LOR to that effect
#mamabear
Today, I had an interviewer ask about my experience as asylum coordinator with
@P4HR
at Georgetown. She asked me why it was important for surgeons to understand healthcare disparities. This is, by far, my favorite interview question. I’m so happy 😌
One of my favorite parts of interview season is meeting such amazing co-applicants. Can’t wait to write papers, present at conferences, and learn surgery with y’all 💫
The only thing standing in my way of a beautiful 5 straight months of surgery 😍 is Step 2. I cannot wait for this exam to be over. Send good vibes/wishes my way please!
Gave a presentation this morning on the STITCH trial and management of fascial dehiscence and abdominal wall reconstruction for my General Surgery AI
@GUMedicine
@GUH_WHCSurgRes
Thank you to my amazing residents for coaching me beforehand!
Very excited to be starting my next gen surg sub-I tomorrow in Burn Surgery! If anyone has any tips for success, resources, or words of wisdom - I would greatly appreciate it.
I’m so blessed to have met
@Jengeller1
and
@PonziniF
through the interview/application season because this gc is the only thing keeping me sane as we enter Match Week

And now, onto my first visiting Gen Surg Sub-I at Emory with the Hepatobiliary Surgery team!
#HPBSurgery
@EmorySurgery
Thank you so much for this opportunity. I can’t wait for this next month in Atlanta!
@KarlosWTheK
I’m so sorry you’re going through this. I’ve tagged you in an Ortho research position post I saw recently, and will continue to keep on the lookout for anything else I find
@action_ap
My favorite way to assess resident autonomy is to ask “what are some surgeries that an average PGY3 or 4 can walk a junior through independently?”
This helps me determine the breadth of autonomy amongst subspecialties as well.

@drdevirgilio
textbook for surgery shelf. his textbook + UW will get you very far for this exam. In terms of the rotation itself, make sure you’re also doing your due diligence in prepping for the surgeries beforehand - know indications, contraindications (1/2)
Just completed my second general surgery AI, and I gained so much from my time at The Burn Center at Medstar GUH/WHC. Burn Surgery is incredibly complex, and being able to learn from an incredible team caring for some of the sickest patients was eye opening.
Super excited to be at the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium this December! Couldn’t have made it here without my amazing mentors
@DrMonikaMD
@jenniferdson
@LucyMDeLaCruzMD
and the rest of the Breast Surgery team at Georgetown Medstar!

Interventional Radiology - you won’t get the rounding on patients though but you get all the medicine and the quick procedures + imaging if that interests you. If you want the rounding and don’t like imaging, then you could always choose a more procedural specialty after IM
Guys. Just finished recording the Action Potential ERAS 2024 Master Guide. Every single aspect of ERAS covered. 1 hour & 8 mins long. Losing my voice hahaha 🤪

Hi
#medtwitter
!!!! MS4 2024 gen surg applicant here, couples matching with
@PhillipPetrasko
(IM). Having a blast on breast/endo/melanoma service this month. Is breast the best? Maybe….
@aartimed
1. Find good mentors early on, especially if you’re considering a competitive specialty. The medical community is small and everyone knows each other. Let them connect you with others. Build a strong network. (1/2)
So excited for this stellar future Internist to take on
#Match2024
Any residency program would be lucky to have such a hard working, brilliant future physician 😍
Take 2:
I am excited to join amazing applicants for an

residency for

. I am interested in intersection of socioeconomic status with population health. I enjoy cooking heart healthy Mediterranean food in my free time

@action_ap
THIS! Other people’s accomplishments and wins do not take away from your own. If anything, seeing your peers win should inspire you to work harder and join them in success! 👏🏽
@aartimed
2. Everyone will have research, scores, etc. when you’re applying. Do what you’re passionate about and that will make you stand out. It’s easy to tell who’s doing something bc they want to and who’s doing it bc they have to. (2/2)
@alex_barna97
@drdevirgilio
for the procedure. Also make sure you’ve read up in the patient chart so you know exactly why this pt is getting this surgery versus some other intervention. Know relevant anatomy. Most common complications postop. Lastly, watch youtube videos of the surgeries beforehand. (2/2)
@sand_loza
I feel this entirely as I study for Step2 right now. I miss all the patients/families I met on my rotations. I can’t wait for surgical residency! So glad to see other future

Check out our latest podcast episode on healthcare startups and how to get involved as a medical student/resident. Very informative talk with
@MattMillett3
@noah_m_hanson
Awesome! I just finished all of UW, and was wondering if it was worth doing the 1-3 hammers on Amboss or doing another pass of UW incorrects - this was helpful! Thank you for your advice :)

Some of the hardest parts of medicine aren’t the things we learn in textbooks. It’s having to tell a patient they have cancer. It’s having those uncomfortable conversations. It’s losing a patient after working so hard to keep them alive. It’s easy to forget that as a med student.
