Shamanism isn't just part of small faiths. As @mnvrsngh points out, you can find some elements of it in fast growing areas of Christianity too. On this week's episode of How God Works, we explore the how's & why's of shamanism's continued re-emergence. https://t.co/t3ATsMmSP6

When everything seems uncertain and unbearable, maybe the end times aren't so bad.... Great essay from @ChristineEmba. (We've got an episode of How God Works on this topic coming soon too)

Apocalyptic predictions may actually serve as comforting fantasies, at which point our future freakouts become an excuse for inaction.

When things are difficult, gratitude can feel out of reach. That's when it's important to remember that gratitude isn't an act of complacency. It can be an act of resistance - a way to know you matter, a way to find strength & resilience. From my discussion with @MeghnaWBUR 1/2

Just in time for Thanksgiving, @MeghnaWBUR and I explore the science of gratitude, how to cultivate it (even in difficult times), and why feeling grateful isn’t just about giving thanks for the past, but about ensuring a better future.

Studies show that feeling grateful can make you more patient, honest, generous and even help with your sleep and immune system. Psychologist David DeSteno on how to practice gratitude daily.

If you value religious pluralism and are interested in the contributions different faith communities have made to the fabric of the US, consider supporting @simran. Faith can be a united, not just a divider.
So excited about our episode on Sikh Americans for Undivided! Grateful for your continued support, especially during the match fund where donations are doubled. Here’s the link to support: https://t.co/7qhNy7OjPe

Religions have always influenced diet. But Christian influencers like @yoalexrapz are taking modern diet & "wellness" ideas and dressing them up in theological claims, with a big one being: God doesn't want you to be fat. I talk with @nytimes Jessica Grose https://t.co/et77UjR0zR

I talk with @RichardvReeves, @drmoore, & @rasoolberry about the crisis men are facing, why some are turning to Christianity, and the benefits and dangers that can come from it, depending on what message they get. https://t.co/tkSqzyR5Yt

Men are facing a crisis of meaning. Many are turning to more conservative forms of Christianity to find it. But the success of that journey, and what it means for the gender divide, depends on what answers they find (and from whom): https://t.co/tkSqzyR5Yt

“In the whole history of the Orthodox Church in America, this has never been seen,” a priest said about the surge of young men drawn to the demanding practice of Christianity.

Of course religious institutions have moral failures. But on average , the data show benefits, not detriments.

Disagree with @sapinker. Religious revival in pluralistic ways makes sense. Data show engagement with it increases health & happiness. Religions evolve too. No one is talking fundamentalism or a disbelief in science. Even if you think it’s a cultural adaptation, it’s a good one🧵
