New thread to continue 100 watercolor sketches w/o time limit. Made 27 sketches before June 16, 2022. This thread contains sketches made after. These four were made mostly plein air with a little follow-up at home at the Yosemite retreat with Molly Hashimoto June 16-19, 2022.

This is Flambo. He's using his talking dog buttons to accuse his small foster brother of being a cat. Nothing can convince him otherwise. 13/10 for both

Thanks for a great podcast! Going to listen to part 2 next. Also, a little sappy note: I've now listened to a dozen or so eps + I'm hooked not just bc u talk about interesting science stuff but also bc of ur sociological observations, which mirror my own but with different i/o.

Today was a rough day, was feeling pretty stressed and a little despondent but listening to this podcast ep lightened my mood and about 44min in I loled at "...those who don't think there's an ether, they're just going to be left behind. bc they're wrong. the end." @Inductica 😂

A deep dive into the biggest crisis in physics - why no one seems to understand light and charge. James Ellias of @Inductica came all the way out to Southern Oregon to do this one in person, and it was well worth the trip. Link in the next post

As a side note, I recently finished _Papyrus_ by Irene Vallejo. One of her anecdotes struck me, a concrete example of how old knowledge becomes obscure, unappreciated, and literally ends up in the toilet to be flushed away. https://t.co/SLBfilP98K

Thank goodness for the University of Cambridge which digitized Starry Messenger and made it publicly available. The original drawing I was looking for isn't there but there are some others. https://t.co/61aqwAVztw

LLMs directed me to Galileo Museum to find the images but it's pretty hard to find anything there by Galileo's own hand. I appreciate that museums try to have an online presence but it's disappointing that I can't leaf through Galileo's drawings. https://t.co/VyX3dtagUO

Here are the moons. The website is Institute and Museum of History of Science. It's disappointing that they covered it with copyright notices. If something isn't in public domain after 300+ years, how long do we have to wait? Lots of knockoffs anyway. https://t.co/tCHJkqOysw

While trying to find original of quoted image (did not find tho I did find the page with moons), I found a hilarious early example of someone stealing Galileo's post, misrepresenting it, everyone thought G was dumb bc of it, took 300+ years for Community Notes to figure it out.

In the autumn of 1609, Galileo Galilei produced these brown-wash drawings of the Moon phases based on his telescope observations. Unlike the English astronomer Thomas Harriot (who sketched the Moon months earlier as a flat map), Galileo used his artistic training in chiaroscuro

When Sean was covering the Palisades fire as a photojournalist, he heard something he couldn't believe. Both pet owners and animal rescue organizations were barred from entering, and pets were stranded across the fire zone. He put down his camera and found a new mission in fire

In the first three weeks of doing a livestream we've had 14 guests give technical talks, getting around 3,500 - 5,000 views each on hardcore physics topics. This is 30 - 50% the viewership of TBPN on topics like 'Superluminal Causation in QM' - here's the full recap. #1

AURORA TIMELAPSE: What was the most frustrating aurora hunt turned into one of the best. Red and pinks turned to blue higher in the sky as the sun illuminated them; you can see the blue line fall as dawn approached and traffic on the road to the lower right picked up as people

Just had to share this video I just downloaded from my camera of the INSANE pulsating aurora last night in Fairbanks, Alaska. Mesmerizing to see the sky light up like this. The video is not sped up at all and the pulsations were easily visible to the naked eye.

Another one just after 11pm at Bass Lake, California. This time I put the camera against a tree stump for 2 minutes in night sight mode. Adjusted shadows and saturation to bring out the color a bit (the Tunnel View one is unedited).

Aurora just after 7pm at Tunnel View in Yosemite (looking at El Cap and Half Dome) taken with an Android phone. Kinda blurry bc I was holding it on a low wall (no tripod) but nice color! 90 second Night Sight exposure.

MUST READ thread before Monday night's forecasted G4 / SEVERE geomagnetic storm. Auroras could be seen as far south as the U.S.-Mexico border at times. Widespread mid-latitude displays are possible. Here's what you need to know to have a successful aurora chase tonight! 🧵
