I have 2 big concerns about the “timed math tests don’t cause anxiety” debate happening (again) today. One has to do with victim blaming. The other is about a research project I know is underway. 🧵/1

It's striking how many people fail to understand that quantified evaluations, such as standardized tests and rubrics, are no more objective than narratives & other qualitative appraisals. They just use numbers to conceal the subjective judgments that underpin them.

Yes, it's January 2024, but September 2023's issue of @VoicesNCTE is about to make it to print. The best things are worth the wait, right? This volume year, we can't wait to introduce you to @Nicole_Mirra and @anterobot's work on speculative civic literacies!

In their book, Dr. @rseglem & Sarah Bonner share insight on how to dismantle hostile environments for students by "empowering students through disruptive inquiry in the ELA classroom." Read Dr. Miller's review: https://t.co/u5yM3YbSy4 @TCPress

"Kids can't read." OK, sure, but how are we understanding what literacy actually means and what it says about the rest of us? Read and share. Thanks! https://t.co/mc9N9OrxO6

1/2 The more you know about what raises scores on standardized tests, the less likely you'd be to celebrate a high score or fret about a low one. Today's 1st example (from Linda McNeil's "Contradictions of School Reform"): "unteaching" in order to dumb kids down for the test.

Her book with Robyn Seglem, Igniting Social Action in the ELA Classroom, demonstrates how to use young adult literature to engage students in social issues: https://t.co/91yEIfFPji @mrsbonner301 @rseglem

Last week, my friend Sarah (@MrsBonner301) “involuntarily resigned” from her classroom teaching position. I am so disappointed with the ways our schooling systems are failing our best teachers. With her permission, I'm going to share Sarah’s statement of resignation. 🧵

I said goodbye to a patient a few years ago. She didn’t die, she just got old. I treat patients to age 21 and they move on. When they do, I joke, “well, I did my job! I kept you alive until adulthood!” With this kid, it was not a joke. 1/

2/2 ...and @plthomasEdD calls it "academic hazing" ( https://t.co/D8FYWzQrDn): "[The fact] that grades inhibit teaching & learning but remain a central feature of traditional schooling [is] more proof that higher ed. is mostly conservative," contrary to conservatives' claims.
