Today is the last day of coal powered electricity in Denmark. Block 3 at the Esbjerg plant will close down today. At its peak it used 500.000 tonnes per year, emitting 1,2 million tonnes of CO2 yearly. A good day for the climate 😊

As it looks like we will head over 2C this February, it is worth revisiting the most important science paper of the century: https://t.co/IJcyzXZxZ2 2 November 2023 @DrJamesEHansen et al "global warming will exceed 1.5°C in the 2020s and 2°C before 2050" Leading to the most

Um. Hello? Media? Politicians? Celebrities? Oprah? The latest global temperature that was just posted by Copernicus (data from Feb. 9) was 2.03°C above the 1850-1900 pre-industrial baseline.

16 We don't need new technologies: we have everything we need to scale-up climate action. We just need to deploy existing technologies faster and on a larger scale, while continuing to decrease their costs

The UN released a "global stocktake" taking a hard look at the state of our planet In short, we are still sleepwalking to a world we will increasingly not recognize It has 17 key findings which I've tried to translate into non-UN speak THREAD

"Climate change is reducing the amount of carbon the trees fix and likely has cascading effects on how much carbon they can provide to their ectomycorrhizal fungi," This is a huge deal. We lose the fungi, we lose the forests. We lose it all. https://t.co/rXVWLXt6dB

Children are taught to leave wild mushrooms alone because of their potential to be poisonous. But trees on the other hand depend on fungi for their well-being.

Back in 1985, Carl Sagan told Congress that continuing to burn fossil fuels will increase global temperature, cause climate change, melt glaciers and ice sheets, and cause sea level rise. His solution: Fewer government subsidies for fossil fuels and use of renewable energy.

The US sold 918,000 new EV last year, representing new annual electricity demand of about 3.67 TWh. Yet the US also created 96 TWh of fresh electricity last year entirely from new wind+solar. Our clean power growth swamps new EV demand. More in tomorrow's @TheGregorLetter

There is no deadline, no timeline, no 'future peak' - every single decision today from the powerful and the rich that leads to stable or rising emissions, instead of falling emissions, is an act that will end up causing pain, suffering and death for the people around you #IPCC
