Our work on the biosynthesis of huperzine A, a neuroactive alkaloid from clubmosses, is now published in @Nature!. Beyond pathway elucidation, we make the surprising discovery that carbonic anhydrase-like enzymes are crucial in alkaloid scaffold formation.

Nature - We show how neuroactive alkaloids from clubmosses are biosynthesized, which reveals an unexpected role for carbonic anhydrase-like enzymes in alkaloid scaffold formation.

Cool new story by Colin Kim @cyhkim (current postdoc in my group) from his time as a grad student in Jing-Ke Weng's lab. Great example of combining plant genomics and biochemistry to understand enzyme evolution/neofunctionalization!.
