This afternoon in Liverpool, @ginger_gm faces Steven Jones, who so impressed at the 2023 British in Leicester. Standing in for Simon at @chesspublishing, I've focussed on the Benko and English Defence, where 5 Nge2!? is a trendy modern gambit. It looks shocking, but works! #chess

Latest @chesspublishing just finished, featuring the topsy-turvy slugfest that was Meshkovs-George, a win for the @ginger_gm, various gambit lines for both sides (1 d4 Nf6 2 Nc3 d5 3 Bg5 c5 4 e4!? isn't so toothless) and overall something of a dangerous d-pawn Bg5 special! #chess

Latest @chesspublishing column is up as I stand in for @ginger_gm! Instructive play from Nihal Sarin and @MagnusCarlsen, but I rather fancy that Simon will most enjoy the Dutch hack - sorry, meistering - that was Di Benedetto-Moussard! #chess

It was warm, but on a superb day of news for English chess, @xtxmarkets-supported @Chess_Fest was a fitting place to be. Numbers very impressive all day, as were the actors. Very well done, @TelegraphChess, @schoolschess. Now name the two famous GMs in yellow! #chess

Enjoying @ginger_gm and #GrandChessTour breaks from proofing today! And my latest @chesspublishing column is up! It features a fine rook sacrifice from @GmNaroditsky, lots on the 2 Bf4 g6 3 Nc3 London and a fine piece of meistering from a Ukrainian GM in Kostov-Bernadskiy. #chess

Almost exactly 12 hours left of @chessable's Greatest Hits sale! I'm currently doing some minor tweaking of The Killer Colle-Zukertort to turn it into a book. @ginger_gm is busy too, at @NorwayChess, but the Colle, The Iron English and his Black Lion are on discount! #chess #sale.

Standing in for @ginger_gm with the May Daring Defences @chesspublishing update, I've covered wins by the classical star of 2025, @rpraggnachess, as well as Magnus, and enjoyed @LeelaChessZero and @stockfishchess serving up another exciting duel with, yes, an early h2-h4! #chess

Thanks to @simon_ansell, I can reveal my latest @chesspublishing column is my 250th update! 🫢 It's already online and contains some very dramatic games, not least Xu Xiangyu - Yu Shaoteng, h/t @TelegraphChess. Absolute madness! #chess

Just had with @TelegraphChess & Alex Longson, the final @ecfchess and @DCMS elite chess grant meeting, the funding from the @RishiSunak-inspired scheme having sadly ended on March 31st. Been a great partnership and successful overall, not least 3 new English Grandmasters! #chess.

Tony has just played 9 Bg5 in this classic game where he out-Anderssoned Andersson in the opening then exploited the initiative with great verve. I've enjoyed studying this game by an English chess legend a few times over the years and even revisited it earlier this year! #chess

Tony Miles (1955-2001) - World Junior (U-20) Champion in 1973, England's first grandmaster (1976) & top-ten player in the 1980s - would have turned 70 today. Pictured here in play v. Ulf Andersson at London 1980; a game played on Miles' 25th birthday. (📷: L. Grahn.)

Very sad times indeed. The only good pub in central Torquay too! I've enjoyed a pint there on every Torquay visit since 2009. Only this government and the last one to blame.

The Hole in the Wall, Torquay, one of Britain's oldest pubs, officially closed last Sunday, after almost 500 years!😔Ever increasing running costs & changing consumers social habits were blamed. The historic Devon pub first opened its doors in 1540. Sad times. 😔

Mainly a @chesspublishing weekend, with the latest column including a win for Artur Yusupov with his favourite Colle-Zukertort. Also notable was Ivan Cheparinov struggling against the Tromp - Heberla-Cheparinov #eicc2025 was brutal and a good advert for The Tricky Tromp! #chess

Great to see the Lifetime Repertoires sale on @chessable! If you've ever wanted to take up 1 Nf3 or explore the fun and trendy 1 Nf3 d5 2 c4 d4 3 b4!?, as in Caruana-Robson from the Champions Showdown Kings, why not check out LR: Reti, with video from @ginger_gm no less? #chess

Finally up to date with @chessable queries! Great to see, @ginger_gm, one happy Killer Löwenthal Sicilian user: "A really cool course that offers you a mixture of sharp attacking lines that will put your opponent under pressure [. ] and some interesting queenless middlegames.".

Many thanks. Hope you and Stanley enjoyed York? Was a very long weekend of mixed duties myself, but great to be part of such an event. Very well done @Radix_UK, @GMGawain, @chessmates_intl. Just a shame England were a bit unlucky in today's crunch match. Yorkshire did OK! #chess.

Well played Team England, so close to finishing 1st, but an amazing performance to come 2nd overall. Thank you to Ben Rich, GM Gawain Jones, IM Richard Palliser, Chessmates and York for an incredible experience for these kids. @ecfchess @ECF_Chess @chessmates_intl @ChessYorkshire

Sam Shankland won a fine game with the London at @PragueChess, so I'm feeling a little bad about my latest @chesspublishing update, which features a truly wicked trap from @IM_Rosen! Rosen-Shankland from @chesscom #TitledTuesday. Can you spot why 10. cxb2 loses? #chess

Latest @chesspublishing column just dispatched! Some instructive encounters from @tatasteelchess, not least Suleymanli-Divya, where White was allowed to go h4-h5-h6 and later won thanks to that cramping h-pawn. I suspect AlphaZero approved, @gmmds? #chess

That was rather a deep line - something which is far from a hallmark of Reimagining 1.e4 - if also a fun and instructive one, as is @NikolaosNtirlis' book itself. If 1 e4 player, go buy, or at least peruse! #chess 🥁

White threatens 21 Nd5!, but after 20. h6 (20. Qf6 21 d7! Nxd7 22 Nd5 Qd6 23 Bxf5 recoups material) 21 Qe3 b6 what to do? I couldn't make 22 Qe7? Qxf4 work, but 22 h4! Qxh4 23 Ng6! fxg6 24 Qe7 Qf6 25 Bc4+ (check!) leads to an ending of Q v R, N & P with some winning chances!👇
