My last day at work. In parting, here's the story of the time I tried to name a new power station after Millhouse Van Houten

After nearly six years working on demand side resource integration in the National Electricity Market, today is my last day at EnerNOC. Before I go, I want to share one nerdy story with my friends...

Decision by energy market rule-maker could pave way for Tesla and others to develop virtual power plants, demand response, and combine electric vehicle load that can compete in the wholesale market with traditional peaking power plants..

Just to be clear: the oil industry is now artificially chilling Alaska's melting permafrost to make it solid enough to drill for and transport yet more oil https://t.co/yx5Kdg5BI3

Hearing how well the NEM performed this summer at the @MonashMEMSI AEMO Quarterly dynamics report for Q1 2018. Thanks to the AEMO market performance team. @AEMO_Media.

I don't always write blog posts, but when I do - they are long-form and full of esoteric charts. Hope some in Aus Energy Twitter enjoy this look at what's been changing in the NEM's FCAS markets

And this is true even with flat, volumetric electricity rates that bundle all costs of grid into a ¢/kWh charge and distort actual marginal cost of charging an EV (if done at right time of day) by ~2-10x. Savings would be MUCH bigger with real time pricing & good network tariffs.

our network operator did a great job keeping the lights on today with 3 significant fossil fuel failures in one day. #coalfail
Three big trips in a day.. Almost 1400MW across the day! Quite the challenge I imagine - a challenge seemingly easily met by our operator!

.@Tesla leads charge against generators over market access
reneweconomy.com.au
Incumbent generators led by Snowy Hydro oppose a push by Tesla and other new technology providers to make demand response more widely available and open avenue for more "virtual power plants".

Shouldn't these fines be going to the jerks throwing bikes into rivers?
We love cycling but we don’t love share bikes being dumped in the river or on the footpaths. That’s why our local laws officers are now allowed to issue oBike with a fine of $3171, on behalf of the @EPA_Victoria¸ if they are causing a hazard. https://t.co/jh3Ry7cYDi

This can't be repeated enough. Wages in Australia are much lower than most people realise
FACT: If you earn the 'average full-time wage' of $82,000, it actually puts you at almost the top 25% of income earners. Median salary is $55,000 - which means half of working Australians actually earn even less. #qt #auspol

Loved this quote on how to fix up EV transition policy in Australia: So, what should be done? “Do the boring thing,” Hackett says. “Look at what works in other countries, copy it, and then pretend you thought of it.”
Redflow technology chief and Tesla owner says governments need to move beyond fossil fuel "idiocy" and get smart about EVs and storage..

Want lower wholesale prices? Just let demand response compete in your wholesale market. Interesting writeup on (usually somewhat obscure) FCAS market cost reductions from @AEMO_Media
