Check out this fascinating paper on how community dynamics influence the political impact of economic shocks! It’s also a great example of effectively combining quantitative analysis with qualitative fieldwork.

Takeaways: culture and the economy are deeply intertwined, making it hard to disentangle this nexus when studying voting behavior. Simpler models, without post-treatment controls, may offer more relevant policy insight than complex models that try to test multiple stories at once.

And while we are at it, we also present some new evidence on how the China shock might have affected some cultural attitudes ---nativism, or impatience with representative democracy--- in western Europe. Link to paper👇.

We show that adding post-treatment controls, like cultural factors, changes conclusions about economic drivers of the backlash. But that's because post-treatment variables introduce bias. We illustrate this by reanalyzing key studies and using a step-by-step contrived example.
