In my
@ElectricLit
debut, I write about "Beef"'s incisive criticism of the humiliating hollowness in pursuing white adjacency, and the irony of its creators doing exactly that in their handling of the David Choe scandal.
A lot of white people would watch a movie with all white cast and say “it’s a movie about people” and then watch a movie centered on POCs and say “it’s a movie about people of color” and I think this mindset shapes both a lot of criticism and studio business decisions too.
I just want to remind folks that Michelle Yeoh is an established film goddess in Asia and while her Hollywood wins are wonderful and so well-deserved, they are not the pinnacles of achievement for her. She is just conquering North America.
I think a lot of white liberals don’t realize that they are deeply invested in making white privilege more ethical rather than eliminating it.
This is why “respectful, authentic, cultural appreciation” has such a halo around it.
I think people could just say that Yeoh is the second Asian to get nominated for a best actress Oscar and then explain how Merle Oberon had to hide her heritage so she had a job.
No need to obscure Hollywood’s shameful past.
I have not seen the movie yet but it really does rub me the wrong way to see white folks gleefully mock BIPOC who wish the movie made some reference to the victims of the bomb.
Is the sentiment really so hard to understand? To treat with something less than scorn?
Just saw OPPENHEIMER, an in-depth character exploration of the people who built the atomic bomb, a weapon of mass destruction that killed a quarter million Japanese civilians. Film is 3 hours long and features zero Japanese people.
That man’s involvement in BEEF *should* overshadow how good the show is. The decision makers chose to stain their good work with shit and it is in them.
Thought the acting on BEEF was next level and want to say let’s not let this clearly very bad dude overshadow the show’s accomplishments but I thought about it for one second longer and realized everyone involved knew he is by his own admission a rapist and overlooked it
I wrote about how lazy narratives in media coverage of cultural appropriation scandals end up peddling the same reductive clichés they condemn.
Congee Karen's sin was not putting blueberries in congee as a white lady, it's her raging racism.
This policy would only make sense if they make EVERYONE traveling into the US show negative Covid tests, otherwise this is just racism plain and simple.
My parents once told me, you'll only win in America if you're so good they are forced to recognize you.
That is an utterly unfair standard that I reject, but seeing Bong Joon Ho and Parasite outshine everyone else in the running makes me burst with pride for them.
Genuinely not attacking this specific creator, but her musings about her popularity despite lack of credentials fails mention how whiteness does so much to help a creator attain success in the food space.
@siruihua
Reread this, even angrier now. The language is incredibly menacing: "unintended consequences" for simply speaking Chinese during free time indicates there's no end to the Othering of international students to make them feel inadequate and unwelcome.
@warpaintmufm
Thanks. I do want to say, a lot of men who like makeup aren't the Axe body spray circa 2000s type, hope to see your comms explore other flavors of masculinity.
In the wake of so many goofy white ppl calling EEAAO overrated, I want to trot out a piece I wrote last summer about how limiting the white gaze is.
Learning to relate to experiences you haven't lived is like developing a muscle for deciphering beauty.
To the vegans who feel victimized by me, I just want to say that if I was feeling quirky and special for doing something that is actually just some mundane act for the majority of population in the world, I'd want someone to tell me.
Still thinking about how perfectly the misapplication of the Bechdel test on a gay rom com represents a certain kind of exclusionary, self-serving feminism that misses the larger goal of equity for all.
Michelle Yeoh, one of the biggest stars in Asia, probably hasn’t been waiting her entire career to finally get top billing in Hollywood.
When will Americans fathom stardom beyond these shores?
POC anger is not for the benefit of the white gaze, it’s not to help YOU become a better white person.
What white ppl think is an appropriate amount of anger displayed in a correct manner isn’t something I’m interested in displaying in order to be known as “one of the good ones”
Women with money *will still have options*, what is happening in Texas is disproportionally threatening the lives of poor women of color and this Handmaid's Tale comparison really needs to go.
The author calls it “internet sleuthing culture”, but more specifically it’s the normalization of stalking and harassment of complete strangers encountered/perceived only through social media.
The thing about Squid Game cast getting American award nominations is that while they deserve wins, 99% of the people evaluating their work likely don't understand some of the finer points of their culturally specific performances.
As Bong Joon-ho famously said, Oscar so local.
The problem with these stern Asian parent tropes is that they get so much more exposure than nuanced, humanizing narratives that balance them out in the same space.
They encourage people to think of Asian parents as cruel, obsessive idiots who don’t understand emotions. 1/
Phrasing it as “Yeoh is the first openly Asian” or “identifying as Asian” makes it seem like a personal decision when the very mention of her identity is about how she is part of Hollywood history.
Let’s talk about Oberon and other POC performers who couldn’t be themselves.
I’m sorry to say that China dropping travel restrictions and Chinese travelers returning to the US will almost certainly translate to Covid-related anti-Asian outrage and panic.
It's not easy to be a not-so-tech-savvy senior in this Chinese digital age. This shopkeeper helped an old lady set up her digital health code, and she came back to thank him with... bananas! ('no no no need to thank me with bananas' ritual ensues)
But the reality is that you don't need to consciously choose to be racist to benefit from systemic racism, and obsessing over proving your innocent conscience doesn't change how your participation in a racist system impacts the outcome for you and for POCs.
Like a broken record, I must say that it’s unbelievably annoying to see white people “interpret” cultures of millions and billions of living people like they’re archeologists 🤦🏻♀️
Being treated like we are dead makes me want to lie down.
Jokes aside, a couple things:
1)
@BreakfastCure
can taut Chinese tradition and recipes with no worry for being called “disgusting” because white ladies are at the helm
2) Their website is devoid of support for actual Asians or denouncement for anti-Asian hatred and violence
“Noodlegate” became a thing because racists are so fragile and violent that they couldn’t let an Asian woman joke about how white mediocrity monetizes ethnic culture.
Roslyn doesn’t care if you eat noodles or stick noodles up you ass to get off. Leave her the fuck alone.
Ironically, David Choe’s involvement in BEEF and the way many in the Asian American community are silent on his unresolved issues with misogyny and anti-Blackness *while* singing BEEF’s praises to the high heavens feels rather like a satirical storyline from within BEEF.
I want to write about the way BEEF the show criticizes white adjacency and how the criticism applies directly to the real life scandal surrounding the show IRL
I'm going to watch Cowboy Bebop, but let me just say that I would've been equally happy with just really good photoshoots of John Cho and company doing Cowboy Bebop cosplay instead.
I was poking around online last night looking for statement t-shirts that reflects my pride in being Asian American, and noticed "me love you long time" designs right alongside "stop Asian hate" ones.
Just want to call out a few big name drop-shipping sites to do better.
🥺 This is what happens when “China Virus” gets thrown around constantly. There’s a GoFundMe link in the article if you want to contribute while he’s recovering and unable to work.
People really show their racism when I—a Chinese American writing about my concern over the safety of Asian Americans in America—get called a CCP shill because I'm criticizing a China-facing policy.
I am actually just shilling for my mom not getting pushed onto train tracks.
If someone told me they think my floor is too unhygienic to take their shoes off they will be asked to gfto, and then I'll phone their mom to inform them they were not raised right.
I am thrilled to share with you my
@MensHealthMag
debut, which delves into the rise of MSG as a culinary miracle ingredient, the insidious, racist myth making that led to its fall from grace, and the boring truth about how it really works.
Ke Huy Quan's origins as a boat person deserve better than to be consumed as a "feel good story" without further examination of forces and events that made him a refugee in the first place.
(Had to cut out incorrect history in previous tweet but my general sentiment stands)
Someday I will gather the courage to write about why many Asian women are afraid/weary of dating Asian men & how it has to do with the shit we have seen in our families & communities & how it is often about survival and self-love. It’s not about who we choose but who we avoid.
There are too many people who reject Black and Asian solidarity, who assume our communities don't want the same things and can't fight for them side by side.
I am tired but I want to address the whole “white woman adopted by Chinese family and grew up studying art of noodles” lie, which first of all, is hilarious, but also, is represents this fallacy that white people can do enough work to deserve to profit off of ethnic culture.
It is very important to do better than referring to the Asian American community as a monolith in statements like this, because plenty of Asian students from less privileged backgrounds will also be hurt by this decision.
People using the fact that the Monterey Park was Asian to laugh at us doesn’t seem to understand how this hurts just as bad/worse in some ways.
All some of you care about is ridiculing us for “making up anti-Asian hate” like we are playing victim to get attention.
Saw a white dude with a huge following on TikTok with a series where he cooks and rates the national dish of every country to figure out which is the best one.
Yes he is really rating the national dishes of different countries via his own cooking.
So 二把刀 is a Beijing slang that refers to someone who knows how to do a thing, but isn't particularly good, the "second blade" refers to "second best for the job".
九把刀 (ninth blade), then, is basically a brick lol
#BeijingWords
chinese pen names are so unhinged and so valid. 九把刀 (nine knives). 请君莫笑 (please sir, don't laugh). 我吃西红柿 (i eat tomatoes). where is this energy for english pen names
This isn't a big revelation or anything, the critique of individualistic approach to racism has existed for a long time.
In today's "cancel culture"-obsessed context there's this litigious angle applied to whether a white person has behaved in a manner that can be deemed racist.
