Starter Homes See It All In 2008, my then-girlfriend bought this quaint and cozy (i.e. small) 650-square-foot, 1-bed home in St. Paul’s Como Park. I will never forget the elated phone call I received when her offer was accepted. She was elated to be a homeowner in her 20s.🧵

Minnesota is not yellow… Yet Kicking the can down the roads isn’t a plan to address the housing shortage.

Does your state light up yellow in the maps below? If so, it was a part of the wave of bipartisan housing affordability reforms that swept across the U.S. in 2025. https://t.co/lEFExNYddu

Short term rentals generally make up very little of the market. Where they do make up a large share , second homes and vacation rentals were a large share of the market long before the housing crisis.

Strict Parking Mandates don't just raise costs, they can be used to as a bulk control to limit parking for new units. w/ Single-Family, a 2-car garage with 30-foot front setbacks = Parking for 4-6 cars (depending on size) Let the property owners decide how much they need.

Denver followed the lead of cities such as Minneapolis, Austin and Boulder, which have all recently abolished parking minimums.

If you build more housing, it becomes cheaper. Might be shocking to some people, but supply and demand never fails.

Rent control has brought development in St. Paul to a grinding halt and damaged the reputation of the Twin Cities around the country - @EvanRamstad

The city is already growing more slowly than was expected this decade. Rent control would be as damaging as it's been in St. Paul.

Impact fees as 15% of the total project budget for new housing in Palo Alto is insane. Housing is a community benefit. Until we approach it with that mindset we’ll never solve our housing issues.

Palo Alto just released a financial feasibility analysis of development in its downtown. Key takeaways: -Nothing is feasible under current market conditions -Removing impact fees—which are over $100/square foot and ~15% of TOTAL cost for midrise housing—would have a huge impact
