Nice steam plume visible from the coast today, at Whakaari / White Island, thanks to favourable weather conditions. Working closely with the wonderful forecasters at @MetService allows us to confirm that no ash was detected #steamfactory #volcano

It is common to see larger steam and gas plumes from Whakaari/White Island when there are ideal atmospheric conditions. We have checked with @MetService who have not detected any ash in the cloud.

Our National Geohazards Monitoring Centre located it’s 100,000th earthquake this week. That’s 4.5 years keeping a 24/7 eye on Aotearoa’s geohazards using @geonet data 👀🌋🌊 Congrats & thanks to our partners @MBIEsci @NZcivildefence @EQCNZ @LINZLDS for helping make this possible!

We are lowering the Volcanic Alert Level to 0 (from 1) at Taupō #volcano. Ground deformation and seismicity are now back to background levels after a year of unrest. Check out our video explaining it all with @eryhughes . @geonet @gnsscience @NZcivildefence @LoveTaupoNZ

Incredibly surreal to have a short article on our recent fieldwork released today in National Geographic. This expedition was 100% a career highlight for me and the experience will stay with me forever. More coverage to come later this year! https://t.co/yMjEUqWXqg via @NatGeoMag

A National Geographic team has made the first ascent of the remote Mount Michael, looking for a lava lake in the volcano’s crater.

Just got back from an epic week on Tuhua Mayor Island. This island is amazing and working with a great crew made it a blast. Here's a short thread of some of our work...

Fantastic week with @nicovolc @gnsscience and our colleagues from GSD in the Solomon Islands working with SI-MetService and @SI_NDMO to capture what cross-agency multi-geo+met-hazard advice looks like, funded by @MFATNZ.

Massive shout out to the unbelievable work and effort that my incredible colleagues did during the week following the 2019 #whakaari eruption. I count my blessings every day to be working with such a bunch of awesome individuals @gnsscience @BOPCivilDefence

Some final notes: we generally don’t share these experiences. And perhaps we should, so far as we are comfortable and feel safe to do so. I feel there is much we can learn from each others beside the science itself

Keep track of your emotional and physical wellbeing, and of that of your colleagues. You need to be at your best when things are at their worst. And you can’t do that if you are burnt. This is an example of self-check I made half way through the response to the #whakaari eruption

Focus on providing ACTIONABLE advice. Understand HOW decisions are made (and by whom). Only then, reverse-engineer what science advice is needed to enable that decision making. #action . In other words, be an enabler

Be truthful. “We don’t know” is a perfectly valid answer. Following with “but what we do know…” provides purpose and builds confidence. Don’t sugar coat it. Be honest.

If possible, only use a simple, single plot that most resonates with non-experts to illustrate and support your key messaging throughout an event (e.g., RSAM as proxy for “volcanic activity”). See many great COVID-19 #SciComm examples

Back any messaging with data. Science advisory has to be evidence-based and defendable. This is not negotiable. Be clear that you are not offering a personal opinion: it is the result of team effort from a group of experts, regardless of how small your team may be

Start with empathy. Patient care is a massively important factor contributing to good healthcare. Use this approach for crisis comms. Never forget that people are suffering - they will probably remember more how you made them feel, than what you actually said #aroha #empathy

Yesterday, I gave one of my weirdest talks ever at #IAVCEI2023, sharing science advisory experience at the frontline during the response to the 2019 Whakaari #eruption. Here are some take home messages for those who may have to do it in the future @IAVCEI_ECRNet #SciComm #volcano

When the rain got heavy it was kinda fun seeing the kids run outside in the pond on our lawn. But having seen videos of kids swimming in very dodgy looking stormwater 💩, I thought I should share this video we recently made with @AklCouncil on what NOT to do...
