Waking up to discover that Twitter has - banned a bunch of journalists, apparently for reporting critically on its CEO; - apparently shut down access to Spaces after one critical of its CEO; - marked many Mastodon domains as malware & used disinformation warnings to block others

every time I've opened Twitter this week to tweet something innocuous about birds or gay raspberries or whatever, it's been a real Troy-returning-with-pizza situation

cleverer version of this tweet: going from Twitter, an undifferentiated service where we present a single identity & followers do the selection work, to a differentiated one, like Mastodon, where we as posters have to code switch, is more work than most people are willing to do

the thing about Mastodon is it appears to have all the same issues as Discord without the good onboarding

an interesting thought experiment: what happens to the average user experience if Twitter loses its layer of blue-tick-leftover-from-2017 occasional shitposters (hi!) and replaces them with accounts that have a reason to pay for algorithmic reach?
"Twitter will still have a free tier." Yeah, but if pay-to-win accounts are prioritized for visibility, as Elon suggested, you're going to be drowned in tweets by the lethally boring blob that will expense annual Twitter Blue subs via line items in institutional budgets.
