What separates democratic socialism, social democracy, and communism from one another? A great deal. This is my stab at putting together a very basic typology of different kinds of socialisms.

It turns out that a strong, principled leftist government can gain and retain popular support. So what’s the U.S. Democratic Party’s excuse?

Using my recent conversation with the crew at @LeftOnRedNYC about this year's DSA convention (link in post below) to also reflect on the other 6 conventions since 2013 I've been able to attend. It's been surreal to watch the org grow to say the least.

I'm on the Rashida or nobody train too, but totally understand that she doesn't want to run. If she doesn't, we'll need to get creative about how to enter the 2028 presidential campaign in a different way. May Day 2028 will become even more important.

Really enjoyed going on Left on Red for the first time to talk about all things DSA convention. Chris and I also briefly relived the moment in our living room in late 2015 when a dozen comrades agreed to refound NYC-DSA.

DSA caucuses talk a lot about their politics, but one of the best ways to understand what they really believe and do in practice is looking at how convention goes. We had Chris Maisano (SMC) & @nealmeyer (BnR) on to talk about convention, DSA internal politics, & where we go now.

A body of 13 comrades elected by the convention at the outset. To protect minority rights to make motions, say that it takes 60% or more of that body to say a motion is unreasonable and it doesn't get heard. I'm still confident most motions would be filtered out.

It was a great DSA convention but this is particularly painful to see. So much time lost to procedural motions, the vast majority frivolous. But this is also a solvable problem. Create a small body to hear motions and give it the power to decide which go to the floor and not.

Convention stack stats. Procedural motions made up 1/3 of stack requests made, but took up half the speaking time, not including the vote processing times for the chair and tech

More and more people are saying it. If you're one of them, you're invited to join the next national reading group with DSA's Bread & Roses caucus here.

I really respect the work of the DSA candidates from "the left-er" slates but I worry that they can be too aggressive in handling relations with our many elected officials and at a time when we are building our party that is something we need to be cautious about.

For DSA NPC I'll be voting for B&R candidates (Cerena, Ella, Hayley, Andrew) first, then Abdullah, Sarah M from R&R, Josh R. After that I will rank the candidates of the Socialist Majority Caucus and Groundwork slates. Of the remaining slates I feel closer to them politically.

The problem with (correctly) making the observation that the Democratic Party is not a mass membership party and stopping at that is that it fails to think through the very serious problems with the fact that it's one of the classic examples of a party of notables.
