Roc has changed the syntax for calling functions. Now it’s “C-like” enough and should be getting a lot more attention. Still trying to understand its “algebraic effects” situation. But it’s an awesome language regardless.
I legitimately think that if there was a C-like syntax option for Roc (a la ReasonML for OCaml), Roc could literally take over the world. Side note:.I hope “local mutation” doesn’t affect function purity.

And if you’re interested in the new thing I built, it’s here: I took a break from working on it after the talk, but rest assured, it’s not “abandoned”, even if it’s not supposed to be “used” yet.

My talk from #ReactSummit is finally up!. I’m quite proud of this one, and I built something you may not expect to be built in 2025. I also tried a weird concept for the whole structure of the talk.

React Hooks are modelling Algebraic Effects in JS without generator functions. Algebraic Effects are great but the way hooks model them is a leaky abstraction. Generator Functions in JS would have bad DX and perf however (because iterators are mutable).
React hooks are full of footguns that make it easy to introduce bugs in your code. I have trained hundreds of developers on React and how to use React hooks effectively. Here are a few of the most egregious and common ways people misuse hooks. 1/n.

What happened to this? Did it ever ship?.
@TkDodo @_cristianvr_ The part that’s not implemented is that if the context changes but the useMemo result does not, React should skip rendering the children of the component it belongs to (unless there were other, unrelated state changes).

When people like @Huxpro and @Baconbrix are speaking, it does cause a bit of panic while preparing!.
I’m crashing @ReactSummit to talk about “not React”. I’m trying some crazy ideas to try building the JS equivalent of compiled atomic CSS. Rethinking Best Practices™.
