John Gurdon https://t.co/QXMjHLKlS3, beacon of a generation that tackled head on the deepest question of biology: the development of an organism. The best tribute to him and his peers should be to remember and follow the path they forged for how to do Science in form and content.

Intriguingly, the scale and resolution of the study enabled them to capture how embryonic gene expression varies upon different exposures. Hence, the color variations illustrate the spectrum of subtle phenotypic changes detected in otherwise seemingly identical embryos 🟢🟡🟣⚪️🔴

To robustly identify the earliest molecular signatures of inter generational inheritance, they profiled 100s of embryos, across 3 paternal treatments, 2 paternal ages and 2 genetic backgrounds - represented here by an array of mouse blastocysts (each a real microscopy pic!) 🐁

POP art, with its serial repetitions and many colour variations of otherwise identical objects perfectly embodies this systematic, impressively large-scale study and its key findings.

Imagine going to a seminar and listening to the speaker also talk about how the big idea happened. Join us Sept. 22 for the first talk in the "Night Science Seminar Series" where I'll talk about cellular plasticity and also discuss how the idea came about! https://t.co/NL50oO9gsD

Always a joy seeing my images going around! Thanks for the shout out @ItaiYanai !
@NightScienceIns By the way, the image for this talk about how cancer cells adapt was painted by the amazing Marzia Munafò! Thank you @munafomarzia!

Scientists @CellPressNews reviewed 408 YouTube clips of sleeping cats and found 2/3 curled up on their left side. Here’s the neuroscience behind why:🧵 (Please watch their video abstract I put on the last post - it’s 100% worth it)

In today's episode of the Night Science Podcast we talk with Martin Schwartz from @Yale about the importance of stupidity in science: while learning science makes you feel smart, true scientific discovery often involves feeling stupid, because it means venturing into the unknown.
New Night Science Podcast episode! Martin Schwartz from @Yale talks with us about the importance of stupidity in scientific research, how the ego can obstruct creativity, and how resilience, self-discovery, and the cultivation of "passionate indifference" – are key in science.

This study reinforces a key point: your environment and daily habits shape aging and disease risk potentially more than your genes. While genetic predisposition matters, it is not deterministic. The right lifestyle choices can mitigate many risks. /10 https://t.co/yFQdEE3j9f

Lifestyle is a stronger predictor of aging and mortality than genetics. A new Nature study of ~500,000 people found: 🎯 17% of mortality variation was linked to lifestyle (exposome). 🧬 <2% of was explained by genetics. Here’s what you need to know 👇🧵 1/10

Unlocking fertilization 🗝️ out today @CellCellPress , @deneke_v , Blaha A & @PauliGroup @IMPvienna uncover a conserved protein complex on vertebrate sperm that recognizes distinct egg ligands in mammals and fish, thus enabling fertilisation. A #sciart and #scicomm 🧵

I loved how subtle aspects were incorporated into this piece, like the tripartite key, drawings of sperm and egg on the door and even some phylogenetic trees! 🌟 But did you notice, what lies beyond the door? Ribosomes and molecules found within the egg!
