. Here to learn. No one is free until all of us are free. She/her.
I have a student in gr 9 who, for a variety of reasons, is reading at a gr 1 lvl. We work together at lunch on phonics and vocab.
Today, one of our words was PREDICT. I asked him to use it in a sentence. He said, "I predict that I will be able to read next year."
I love him.
I am being asked to cross a picket line tomorrow.
@tdsb
wants me to teach online (not part of my contract), which will lessen the impact of

strike, and make this drag on for longer.
Where is my union

Cranky tweet: I'm gonna need a moratorium on the use of the words MENTAL HEALTH. Some of us have actual, diagnosed mental health issues. Kids feeling bored and frustrated and disconnected during a GLOBAL PANDEMIC, are experiencing a normal, healthy response to a shitty situation.
The Temporary Resident Visa program was announced in January in response to the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza.
The program has failed to bring even one relative of a Canadian citizen to Canada. .
Oh, and this feel-good tweet is brought to you by UNPAID LABOUR: I volunteer my time because it matters.
But everyone from
@tdsb
to
@Sflecce
should be ashamed that they do not fund one-to-one reading intervention for kids who need it most.
Re: masks in school. Half of my students are online and I am teaching “hybrid”. If it’s safe enough for masks to come off, it’s safe enough for kids to be back in class. Full in-person must happen before masks are lifted. 1/2
Help me understand: Learning about the Nakba is political. But learning about the Holocaust is not.
Learning about genocide against Palestinians is political and divisive. Learning about genocide against Jewish ppl is humane and mandatory.
Make it make sense.
Min of Ed
@Sflecce
has echoed the voices of many parents & educators, urging
@PeelSchools
to reconsider its decision to include Nakba Day in its list of significant days.
As he said, “it is critical that schools bring people together, not further divide our society & students.”
Mike Harris destroyed public education in Ontario, and now is getting rich(er) by exploiting the elderly with his for-profit LTC homes. And for this, he gets the Order of Ontario. Outrage doesn't begin to cover it.
As Chancellor of the Order of Ontario, it is with great pride that I congratulate the 2019 and 2020 Order of Ontario appointees.

appreciation post. You put everything on the line. You didn't back down. You stood up to the bully.
Just a complete and inspirational badass.
English teacher life hack: have your students annotate their written work. Makes marking so much easier/better-informed, and adds a super valuable layer of metacognition.
Here are my instructions for annotating their memoirs:
Check the pic for example!
Oof. Weeks of hearing how horrible virtual learning is, how kids aren't learning anything.
It's so demoralizing. It also discounts the incredible effort my students put in. They are growing + learning every day. Reading books, writing poetry. Please don't call this a lost year.
Slightly off-brand thread: I've been talking with teacher friends about FOOD and how overwhelming it can feel to cook on school days.
I'm a big fan of meal prepping, but not in the Instagram way: I like variety, so I prep a bunch of things that can be configured multiple ways.
Hi
@ColinDMello
! I know that threatening a teacher strike is good for clicks, but this is fearmongering. Wanna know how I know? Here's a quote from your own article: "None of the teachers’ unions have indicated there are any plans for strike votes or to walk off the job."
Ontario’s teachers’ unions are warning the Ford government that they are ready to “mobilize” if the province imposes a contract on educators or uses the notwithstanding clause to settle any bargaining dispute.

A 🧵:
As we move toward Destreaming in Sept, I've been getting a flood of emails from teachers asking about HOW to make this work.
I'm no expert, but I've done the reading, and I've taught destreamed Eng for 3 years.
So, if you like, here are my answers to the most common qs:
FYI: Dr Alanna Golden is only seeing patients virtually.
She also wrote a National Post op-ed against vaccine passports.
I would love if
@cristina_CP24
elaborated on the whole context here.
For those already arguing that schools must reopen on the 3rd, no matter what, two of my colleagues have covid which they surely caught at school last week. Flimsy blue masks, classes of 30+ and maskless lunches = covid tsunami.
And yes, get ready for the fall when labour talks are about teachers: it will be about money, and rightfully so. I'm tired of apologizing for wanting to keep up with inflation.
I love my job with all my heart, but I am an expert, not a volunteer.
Comparatively,

A4 teachers earned $77,542 in 2004. Given inflation, they should make $115,900 today. However, they've done far worse than OPP officers and make $103,000.

Honest answer: if everybody walks, this is over in a couple days. If we teach online, we lessen the impact of the strike and make this drag on.

I'm a teacher, and YTA. But mostly because of the closed door policy. Kids have a right to be in your class - it's not a privilege that you get to withhold because they are 4 mins late. When they come in late, let them know they are welcome and you're so happy they made it.
Genuinely curious: do Catholic schools acknowledge the role of the Church in residential schools? I'm seeing lots of Catholics educators posting about orange shirt day, and that's awesome, but it got me wondering how much acknowledgement there is of WHO did this?

I have wanted to be in school all year. I chose that option.
But if I can be real honest: it's not about safety now. If they send us back for 3 weeks, into sweltering rooms, to teach "hybrid" again: I might break. Please. Just let me teach ONE way and finish this year.

Teachers — worry about it Monday. You can wake up early, grab a coffee in your kitchen, check your email and log in to your staff meeting. You’ll figure out what to do then. Worry on Monday. Not today. Not tomorrow. MONDAY. Happy New Year all. :)

Lots of coverage right about student behaviours in schools. Everyone has a right to feel safe, but I'm worried about the tone and tenor of these convos.
Here's what I know: Behaviour is communication. The behaviour we are seeing is communicating that kids are not ok.
Your yearly reminder that $100k today is the equivalent of $63k in 1996, when the list was created.
Solidly middle class and utterly un-noteworthy.
I would have to make $156k today in order to qualify for the list, according to their 1996 standards.
In conclusion...pay me more
I am teaching Grade 12's this semester, and worried about how they would receive/perceive being taught structured literacy. I worried that practicing sounds would feel babyish.
And then I accidentally (it came out of my mouth unplanned) hit on a nerve that created total buy-in.
I can't, in good conscience, grade my Ss during this time of crisis. I will provide generous, loving feedback, and I will urge them to keep practicing their skills. I'll be available to them in every way I can think of. But I will not grade them. If forced, well, 100 is a grade.
When asked why there will be grades as opposed to pass/fail at the end of the year, Minister Lecce says students have a role to play to be disciplined and to take this seriously. But that puts a lot of responsibility on families who have a range of capacities.
@PeopleforEd

This helped me explain that practicing sounds, and blending them, will increase fluency and take that shame away.

- Destreaming for the past 3 years has made me a much better, more engaging teacher. With Academic classes, it is easy to mistake compliance for engagement.
I'm gonna say that again because I think it's the heart of the matter:
It is easy to mistake compliance for engagement.
@JesseBrown
"At this time, there is no evidence to indicate that this is a hate-motivated incident. Messaging left at the scene was not hate-related and spoke to the ongoing conflict in Gaza," police said in a statement to CTV News Ottawa at 3:30 p.m. on Friday.
You're slipping, Jesse.
@k8e_allen
Right?? And kids internalize this messaging and pathologize their feelings. Like, no, honey: your feelings are real and valid and I hope for better times soon. But thinking that a global pandemic sucks is not a sign of mental illness.
Presenting to my colleagues tomorrow about anti-oppressive assessment and evaluation: I see my little Grade 9's already crumbling under the weight of constant testing. Hoping to inspire a tiny bit of change.
Check out what we've got so far if you like!
This week, Ontario's Minister of Education asked that a portion of the front matter for Ontario's new math curriculum be removed. The material that was cut referred to anti-racist and de-colonizing strategies. 2/3

Minister, my students would get a very poor grade for using an editorial in the Sun as their sole source of evidence. Since you're so proud of the work you're doing, release your sources. Let's see the raw data from your epic consultations. Why are you hiding?
We cannot change the trajectory of the pandemic this school year, but we can reframe our daily thoughts to get through it.

In my 12 yrs exp, kids stop being late with this approach (and therefore no more need for weird convos about periods...). The kids who are late now, have good reason to be, and it's fine! This is not about ME, this is about them being whole-ass humans who sometimes are late!
- I have learned to center LEARNING, not EVALUATION. That has been a massive psychological shift, and has been a game changer. When you are committed to students learning the concepts, a world of creativity opens up.
For those asking, I am using the incredible resources from . I'm doing it twice a week, for 10-15 minutes, and this is a snapshot of what it looks like:

They need more caring adults in the building, funded programs, and outlets for their energy.

This is intellectually dishonest. Are they protesting the synagogue? Or are they protesting the illegal selling of Palestinian lands?
Any Jews of conscience who live by Tikkun Olam should be out there with them, saying NOT IN OUR NAME.

Hi Ms Falconer: you stated in last night's meeting that the "hybrid model" has been successful and voluntary this year. Can you please be transparent about where you got this data? Why have staff and students not been surveyed in any way about next year's model?
I should add, I wish I could adequately describe the relief on some faces when they realized how many other hands were up. I think kids feel very alone in their school-shame. Like everyone gets things except them.
@Sflecce
For just one day, I challenge you to talk about class size and e-learning. You can go right back to calling me greedy the next day. But for 24 hours, forget the word compensation and tell the people of Ontario what you want to do to our education system. I dare you.
@AllHandsCook
My question with this report is "can you define deterioration in mental health"? I think the term mental health is being weaponized. Being bored and missing your friends is a normal, healthy response to a global pandemic, NOT a sign of a mental illness.
@cmclymer
Are you open to considering that your view of this is biased? I have learned from Palestinians that the origin of "from the river to the sea" is a poem.
"Palestine will be free" is only "calling for the destruction of Israel" if you believe those two things are incompatible.
- KIDS: To be clear, kids are NOT problems to be solved. What I mean is that my experience has shown me that kids who are streamed into Applied are exactly as intelligent as "academic kids", but sometimes have fewer Executive Functioning skills.
ENG Teacher friends: I've been working hard to make new resources for Gr9 that incorporate structured literacy/the new foundations of language strand.
These are for ENG1L, so maybe too simple for you, but feel free to peruse/copy/adapt.

In my classroom, you will find:
-every desk-grouping has a container full of pencils, highlighters, erasers and sticky notes
-a bin where students keep their notebooks
-folders on the wall, labelled by day, for hand-outs
-a whiteboard dedicated to reminders abt tasks + due dates.
I know everyone wants to forget about covid, but these children (reminder, we are talking about children) have experienced a huge trauma and disruption. Of course they're acting out.
I am on this hellsite exclusively bc of the amazing educators I get to learn from.
But friends... this is the time of year where it gets SO HARD to follow American Ts, talking about 3 weeks left and end-of-term activities...
Ontarion Ts, I see you. June 30 gang is hanging in.
When we set up the structure of the classroom so that kids have everything they need to learn, we mitigate disruptions and distractions, and get right to learning!

What is $80 compared to the future of our planet? Another non-Education related tweet from the non-Education related Minister of Education. You can do better than this.

Virtual learning is not ideal, but it is MUCH better than risking our Covid progress for 3 hot, humid weeks in unventilated classrooms and going back to "hybrid" where I am livestreaming to half the kids. Let's just keep our heads down and finish this awful year.
