If you’re learning about Guantanamo from the new season of @serial, here are two comics sharing first-hand accounts from the prison that are really powerful. These are voices we all need to hear. Mansoor Adayfi: https://t.co/9uWlf45TYj Matt Diaz:

Imprisoned in Guantanamo, wild animals reminded me I’m human.

I finally got the most recent covid booster today. I’ve been putting it off because I don’t have insurance. Without insurance, the shot costs $190. 🫠 This is such a crime, it should be free.

I appreciate that this show makes it very clear in episode one that we are breaking international law at Guantanamo and features voices of prisoners. So much other media about Guantanamo is framed around the wrong question, ā€œIDK is this right or wrong?!ā€

ā€œIt’s exhausting because you’re pretending.ā€ This is exactly how I felt reporting at Guantanamo. So messed up.

Listening to the new @serial about Guantanamo and it gets right to the point: we put people in prison without knowing who they were and with no path to releasing them. Listen to the show!

Both of these stories are featured in my book Guantanamo Voices. You can get a copy right here. Message me if you’re a teacher and want a discount (teachers should never pay full price in my opinion).

The next season of @serial is about Guantanamo. I got an alert today that they shout out Guantanamo Voices in their ā€œspecial thanksā€ section. 😭 I’m glad this horrific, ongoing crime is getting more attention. I hope the show changes Americans’ understanding of Guantanamo

Through comics, we can shape the narratives told about ourselves and our world—and in that way, we hope to provoke change.

Social media sites have a lot of profit-driven limitations and censorship, so we felt that there really needs to be an independent site dedicated to publishing and preserving comics about what's happening right now.

Since October, I've been working behind-the-scenes on a project with my cartoonist friends Yazan al-Saadi, Tracy Chahwan, and Andy Warner: an online archive of comics responding to the ongoing genocide in Palestine.

Wow, in France, one in four books sold is a graphic narrative. This is really good news for people who make nonfiction comics!

One in four books sold in France is a graphic novel. Increasingly, those include nonfiction works by journalists and historians.

I spent the past month (months, maybe?) digging into the roots of the state's homeless crisis -- and potential solutions. Here's part one of the resulting story (stay tuned for the second half, coming tomorrow):

The path out of Oregon's homelessness crisis isn’t simple, nor is it direct. But solutions do exist. To uncover them, it’s important to first understand the origins of this crisis.

But seriously, as @PENamerica documents, many, many of the challenges to books target books with queer and trans themes. Kids and teens need to see themselves represented on the page. Gay comics save lives.
