@GBBranstetter Lefitsts did not campaign on identity politics. centrists use identity politics to attack the left. hillary did this to great effect in 2016. it was when republicans were able to weaponize it on centrists that centrists then suddenly said it was a leftist tactic.

Mamdani presents such a riddle to centrist Dems because they've spent so much time accusing the left of focusing too much on like trans rights or DEI and not enough on the economy but now that a socialist beat one of their own on affordability they have to say "no not like that".
Democratic congressman @Tom_Suozzi slams Zohran Mamdani as "a bad example" who made "lofty, utopian promises: free public transit, free college tuition, more public housing"

No mention of the economy or inflation as they slash funds for health care and food to pay off a tax break for billionaires, while the voters who cared most about the below issues (sans immigration) voted overwhelmingly Democratic. High on their own supply.
The main domestic issues that animated the campaign were taking back America’s culture and sanity (understanding almost everything else is downstream). Banishing DEI and leftwing race bigotry. Stopping trans and gender madness. Halting hostile migration. Implementing mass.

Both/and. Dispossessing their own voters is how people like Vance manufacture consent for mass deportations which they then sell as the cure to that dispossession. One's not a distraction from the other--they both create a feedback loop of racism and resentment.
Worth noting that Vance is using anti-immigrant sentiment to distract from the real goal here: gutting Medicaid and handing tax breaks to the rich. The Big Billionaire Bill isn’t about border security, it’s about bleeding the safety net dry.

Insane that Mamdani is being asked to condemn words he has never said while being accused of not saying words he has repeatedly said in multiple venues over the course of months.
Sometimes the things people don't say are actually what we hear the loudest. At a time when anti-Jewish hate has surged to record levels, it's shocking that any candidate would be unwilling to tell Jewish New Yorkers explicitly and unambiguously, "Here is my plan." Or "I’m with

This is really the bedrock of why Mamdani is not as vulnerable to identity grievances over immigrants, trans people, Muslims, or more. Democrats keep trying to focus group their way out of these issues one-by-one but their vulnerabilities are more existential than that.
The great @IsabellaMWeber in @NewYorker 📢: "Zohranomics" is more than a program for an affordable NYC. It is "anti-fascist economic policy." Go Bella! 🔥.
