“Cognitive core” is the on-device, multimodal LLM that’s small enough to be extremely fast and smart enough to know when to ask the cloud for help. Fascinating period in model development right now that might mirror early hominid evolution when nature was “figuring out” optimal.
The race for LLM "cognitive core" - a few billion param model that maximally sacrifices encyclopedic knowledge for capability. It lives always-on and by default on every computer as the kernel of LLM personal computing. Its features are slowly crystalizing:. - Natively multimodal.

I suspect latency is quietly dictating AI-coding-agent behavior far more than we realize. When responses can take minutes, vibe coders are spinning up multiple apps to work in parallel. But as frontier models slash latency, parallel usage is going shrink, and the market will.
