THREAD. Ok, folks. Sit back & strap in. Let's take a ride through history as we explore the US position on Taiwan's status, shall we? (Note: as inspiring as I may find @pptsapper's work, I've yet to have lunch, so this history will be entirely sober. Please accept my apologies.)

Until this month, Radio Free Asia had successfully resisted Trump officials who had tried to render it obsolete.

People talk as if going through a Nazi phase when you're younger is just normal. IT IS NOT NORMAL TO BE A NAZI AT ANY AGE! When I was younger, I was not surrounded by Hitler-loving peers. AND I GREW UP IN IRAN!
This is a median response, so will use it as an example but not aimed at this comment. Would also suggest people go and listen to @grahamformaine on @PodSaveAmerica. I have my suspicions that several of you have not. Fair to argue that Platner has more to do to assuage concerns

I cannot wait for the moment a Dem candidate is revealed to have a Robert E. Lee back tattoo. It’s going to be amazing.
I met many folks in my Yale Law class who were worried about their confirmation hearings at the age of 22. We could have a governing class of those who started preparing as kids, or we could make room for Americans who have led imperfect lives & whose lived experience pushes

Taiwan is not Trump’s (or America’s) to hand over.
As I’ve been warning, contours of a grand strategic bargain emerge in US-China negotiations: Trump gets a trade deal. Xi gets downgraded US commitment to Taiwan, i.e. Trump “opposes” island’s independence. It’s a slippery slope to handing over Taiwan. https://t.co/YQlUj4X792

@IIPS_org Senior Director @mike_mazza spoke on the recognitions of Palestine's statehood at the UNGA, arguing that Taiwan has a better case for statehood, and that politicians are pursuing "inflated ambition[s] to bring peace to the Middle East." More📚: https://t.co/vzHoNG8A6x

By any measure, the case for Taiwan statehood is far more compelling than that for Palestinian statehood.
I write with @mike_mazza of blessed memory about the hypocrisy of recognizing Palestine while refusing to meet with Taiwanese leaders, an actual state, unlike Palestine, and a good one at that. https://t.co/Tlk4jOfl2d

I don’t understand how it is illuminating to compare a single economy to a group of economies that are not economically integrated to a customs union.
