Black women are expected to perform so much emotional labor for so many random ass people. Like, who the hell is Rebel Wilson? What does Meghan owe her?
The
@BreeNewsome
erasure is violently unbearable. This framing is also inaccurate and disappointing. This city is constantly attempting to re-write history by moving Black figures and narratives to the background while lifting up meager, white (and white proximate) magnanimity.
Five years ago on July 10, 2015, South Carolina’s governor and legislators showed the nation it was time to acknowledge the pain associated with the Confederate battle flag.
It was just the beginning.

B) Clueless about the lengths women athletes have to go to earn competitive salaries.
This is what happens when a Black woman in

Rice in South Carolina is deeply political.
Rice in South Carolina is Black.
Exploited Black labor revolutionized rice cultivation in the South and made many white families obscenely wealthy.
They’re still getting rich off (some of) us. Some of y’all is complicit.
Alan Wilson may be taking a macabre victory lap following this trial. But we remember when he treated Kyle Rittenhouse to BBQ. MAURICE’S BBQ! If you know, you know.

Every major restaurant in Downtown

owes Martha Lou Gadsden a debt of gratitude.
Recipes that Martha Lou’s Kitchen and similar establishments perfected and popularized are heralded as award winning dishes in white-owned eateries.
Where are the public tributes?
When I met

This is disgusting. SHAME on Shanshui for exploiting Black death for commercial gain. No matter how much they donate, they stand to benefit financially and in other ways. This is reprehensible and offensive. This line needs to be pulled ASAP!!!
The default for women like this is violence. Violent, racist rhetoric. Violence in the form of economic pressure. Once a Black woman revokes her labor or compliance, these “Kathryns” resort to violent tropes. Like clockwork.
The local news coverage here in Charleston will continue to showcase the damage that businesses & buildings sustained. The tourism economy will emerge as the “real victim”. This is the narrative that will take hold. This is how they’ll frame it.
Even after if this, I wouldn’t leave South Carolina. Over 5 years of organizing across the state...the work is HERE! The people are HERE! The wins will be HERE!
Leaving isn’t the solution. I won’t promote that type of defeatist mindset.
#ImStayin
Memeification and commodification of extrajudicial killings of Black bodies is horrible anywhere. But when it’s done here in the “cradle of slavery” - - in a city that has yet to address the harm it’s done to Black lives and entire communities- - it’s worse! This is GROSS!!

“There has been a deliberate effort by very powerful industries and organizations to sanitize and whitewash Charleston and show a ‘safe’ and white and palatable Charleston,”
The State, July 30, 1906. Columbia, SC. This is just one historical account of many I've found in the archives. This underscores the fact that the demand... the entitlement to Black women's labor is part of a twisted, timeworn tradition. This article provides so much clarity.
Every single

I look forward to the
@postandcourier
’s forthcoming investigative piece about how a sitting member of
@CityCharleston
council was a key participant in a white supremacist rally with the Proud Boys. Harry Griffin should resign IMMEDIATELY after what he spearheaded yesterday!
I don’t need our elected officials to “disagree” with their colleague’s involvement in a white supremacist rally. I need them to DENOUNCE that action. Adamantly. Publicly. Vehemently.
I think most organizers know that any gains made in GA don’t belong to any one woman. However, there’s power in lifting up Stacey Abrams’ name given how valiantly she fought, how unjust her loss was and how determined she was to create more access to the ballot for others.
The caucasity. The unmitigated gall. You will not take this moment in history and use it to reconstruct your image. You’ve upheld and promoted white supremacy on your show, in your daily life and now you want to exploit our collective trauma. STFU!
Living in

This is sitting city councilman Harry Griffin heard giving enthusiastic praise to the organizers of Saturday’s alt-right rally in

If you start a phrase with “I’m not a Trump supporter but...” - - You’re a Trump supporter. You’re just self-aware enough to know it’s not cute. Stop wasting my time trying to normalize hate in my inbox.
They run Charleston like a wannabe Miami. Things in common: both cities are sinking, trying to be a tech hubs, tons of cocaine and golf (paired intentionally) and both have ports.
But at least Miami kept some Latin and Haitian flavor.
The same women who co-signed this altered photo of a tearful AOC responding to human tragedy at the border? Mace is no feminist. Her election is not a victory for women. This isn’t the representation we need or want!
Remember when a white supremacist shot up a Black church in

made sure no mention of its disturbing past made it into this piece. From plantation heir ownership to their poor coverage of Black communities during Jim Crow apartheid, this paper’s ghosts will forever linger. No matter how many billionaires they transact with.
Three years ago in South Carolina, ten local newspapers folded their print editions. But some papers are bucking the trend, collaborating with other newsrooms and raising funds from readers to expand their coverage of vital local news.
If your understanding of Mother Emanuel’s significance extends only to the tragic massacre of 2015 and ignores the church’s rich, rebellious legacy, then of course you’re offended by the protestors’ call for a ceasefire in that sanctuary.
For the life of me, I cannot understand why no news outlet (or former journalist for that matter) has written extensively about how Ellen Weaver, Moms for Liberty and the pr*ud b*ys have all coordinated to create a very specific political impact. The story is right there.
I can’t organize from a position of fear. Fear of losing employment, alienating others or becoming a larger target for scrutiny. All that is already happening. I’m a Black woman of size with a Mic in the South. No amount of moderation makes me safer.
I’ve never concealed nor have I ever hid the fact that I’m Jersey born and raised. But for a few folks, that means I can’t lay claim to my

and its area elected leaders fumble each and every opportunity they are given to confront this city’s painful past. The world is watching the “Holy City” fail its Black residents over and over again. Our city council should be embarrassed.
The City of Charleston should tap into some of them discretionary funds and bailout Black businesses that make their tourism culture such a smash hit. There’s no reason why Nana’s should have to crowdfund for support. COVID or not, Tourism Management should cut a check.
The way white liberals hurl insults like “Uncle Tom Scott” and homophobic tropes at our state’s two Republican senators is revolting.
There are 1,000s of ways to criticize these two. Using racist, homophobic language should never enter the conversation.
The passive framing of Vesey’s legacy will forever be a stumbling block for non-Black, non-Gullah journalists who work quite comfortably within Charleston’s embarrassingly homogeneous media landscape. “Divided”? Misrepresented by the dominant culture.
Denmark Vesey's legacy has divided Charleston for two centuries. Black residents have viewed the slavery insurrectionist as a freedom fighter; Whites have viewed him as a terrorist.
"The latter view is changing today, as more Charlestonians confront the city’s racial history."
This is NOT about an emoji. It’s about challenging “powerful” white women who uphold white supremacy. And when a WOC,

What are y’all saying? Imagine downplaying the actions of a serial offender with an ungodly amount of power and privilege in the name of stan culture. Let Monica own her outrage. It’s hers and hers alone.
Monica Lewinsky happily slept with a married man at the very adult age of 24 and kept the dress Beyonce referenced as a souvenir. I’ll save my sympathy for real victims. 🙄

Think again,

For me, “Southern Charm”, the phrase, is a euphemism for the ritualized subjugation of Black ppl in the South. It’s a fanciful term meant to obscure the history of wicked practices passed down from one generation of the ruling class to the next.
The
@postandcourier
desperately needs more Black writers. So much isn’t captured in their coverage of Black Art, Culture & History. It isn’t enough to speak to Black/Gullah folk for interviews. Your reporters and journalists need a certain level of cultural familiarity.
Ah, I see. When we call our councilperson re: their silence on Harry Griffin and his support of the Proud Boys rally on Saturday, we’re met w/ lectures on “protecting free speech”.
But loud dissenting voices that call for justice are “divisive”?!?!?
Got it!
#CharlestonStrong
One of the worst things we can do re: Councilman Griffin is use his age as an excuse for employing bad judgement. If he is old enough to run for and win a seat on our City's council, then he is old enough to know better than to align himself with racial separatists.
“Charleston County may have voted for Democrats in the last three presidential elections, but it also has a Republican sheriff, J. Al Cannon, who has made it one of ICE’s closest allies in the state.”
Something I’ve observed about Nancy Mace is her use of misogyny in competitive politics. She’s comfortable w/ hegemonic masculinity and tries to mimic toxic maleness to weaponize it against other women. But when competent opponents best her, she reaches back for her femininity.

When Nimrata Nikki Randhawa Haley fixed her lips at the RNC and proudly stated that her parents didn’t give “into grievance”, she’s using their assimilationist values to make a case for or prop-up the “model Asian minority” myth. That shit is tired.
