Whooohoo! Meenal is a true rising star (already a star, but still rising even higher)
I am so grateful to be one of this year’s CMBE Young Investigator awardees and to be amongst this stellar group of rising stars! Looking forward to seeing @NDTIMELab’s paper out soon on macrophage mechanics, led by @AliceBurchett3.

I’m really proud of this work, and also want to emphasize - it doesn’t have to be this way. I feel very lucky to be in a department whose leadership encouraged me to go up w my original timeline despite the challenges of young kids and COVID that I faced as jr faculty
New paper I'm extremely proud of: "Extended time, elevated expectations: The unappreciated downsides of pausing the tenure clock". We argue that extensions should be treated as a safety net, not insurance policy (1/6) https://t.co/aofHOFUInl

Proud of my ND colleague & friend @mholla_back and my colleague & friend @mwelting! I went to a conference for women STEM faculty in July: these issues are PERVASIVE (bar-raising, policy leeway enabling discrimination, & the real cost extensions have on salary & career progress).

Actually one reviewer commented: "I’m not following. So they opt out of an extension. Isn’t this just then the standard timeline as if nothing changed? How does this become “early tenure”?" and it was so amazing to see our point stated so clearly.

Thank you to all the colleagues who chatted with me privately about this over the past ~year. I'm happy to play a role in bringing this conversation into the public view! (6/6)

We wanted to bring some light to these experiences and share some policy suggestions: (5/6)

My coauthors and I (@mace_em @mwelting @GenomeGal @CBIbberson @MaiselLab) wrote based on the literature and our personal and shared experiences. This phenomenon is not discussed much publicly but in trusted spaces you hear the same stories over and over and over (4/6)

And when faculty try to opt out of the extensions they're eligible for, they're viewed as going up "early" (3/6)

Extensions are becoming more and more common (e.g. COVID) and they're accumulating for some faculty (2/6)

Today, when I am making the dumpling wrappers, I am wondering: why don’t people use biaxial stretch to make them? It should be equivalent to the uniaxial compression (roll the dough).🤣🤣🤣
