So excited that Dave’s amazing work is out: phylogenetic trees inferred from 3D structures do well and even outperform trees inferred from sequences! We were first incredulous but we’ve replicated the result using 2 quality indicators and multiple datasets & it seems to hold. 🧵
In a post #AlphaFold world, we can use protein structures in ways we never could before. Can we build phylogenies with them? Are they any good? Yes! Foldtree ( https://t.co/GarG48Y21B) surpasses traditional sequence-based methods, even for closely related proteins.👇

The difference between doing a project and presenting it. An observation can lead to many avenues of explorations before focus turns to a specific discovery. Presenting it, in a talk / paper, follows inversely, with broad perspectives coming before & after the specific discovery.
