I think this is right. @fchollet mentions vision in the next tweet, and I agree with that too. I think this is about saying no to things principally — or, in coding terms, being opinionated. Like sales, you need a compelling story.

There's a lot of value to be created just by uncomplicating things that people have been overcomplicating. Programming is a prime example. Code is a powerful tool, and anyone can learn to think in code. But programming today is far too complicated.

NEW: big international Covid data thread, focusing on the contest between vaccines & variants First to the UK, where things are looking very good. The vaccine effect is still crystal clear, with more than 10,000 lives already estimated to have been saved https://t.co/bbuHMcyVhU

Great profile of Kate Bingham, who deserves huge credit heading the UK Vaccine Taskforce. Using the VC model — collaborative, high risk, high reward — was a difficult choice that has really paid off.

Really enjoyed @TheRSC Dream live performance tonight. Almost felt like being there! Not sure where VR and remote theatre will go, but shall definitely keep watching with interest.

"I'm not talking about you as an individual. This is about us as a society. This is about the collective socialisation of men that has led to some men becoming predatory & harmful towards women. And it's about what we can do, as men, to prevent our brothers becoming perpetrators"

🚨Me shouting about 'zero rating' again (that's tech for 'no data charges for using education websites')🚨 @Ofcom reckon 1m kids do remote ed via mobile, 20% of households are struggling to pay for the data and 5% are cutting back on food and clothes to pay it. This is not ok

Interesting article on China’s much more aggressive regulation of tech businesses recently: it’s both about CCP control and about treating customers fairly. https://t.co/tcNr7U8LOU

A brief summary of the very precarious situation we are in now, and why we have a very narrow window to act in the UK. If we don't act now, it's likely the window for containing COVID-19 will pass- not just for the UK but globally. Here's why. Thread.

There has been some great work on framing AI ethics issues as ultimately about power. I want to elaborate on *why* power imbalances are a problem. 1/

Had a great time at the conference this year, despite the difficulties caused by Covid. Some great talks as ever, and some fantastic and engaging — and quite intimate at times!— panel discussions too. Thanks so much to @PyData and @NumFOCUS for all the hard work!
