Our study provides the foundation for a unifying circuit-based conceptualisation of the functional role of beta activity beyond the motor domain and may inspire an extended investigation of beta activity as a biomarker for closed-loop neurotherapies in dopaminergic disorders.

Given the known relationship of motor beta in PD with dopamine, we tested whether this relationship generalises across functional domains and found significant spatial overlap of dopamine uptake and beta networks at the cortical and subcortical level.

To investigate the underlying circuit architecture, we used MRI connectomics and seeded from beta vs. alpha dominant channels. Beta networks comprised strategic subcortical brain areas, such as striatum and amygdala, important for movement, cognition, memory and emotions.

We analysed 30 hours of invasive brain signal recordings of Birgit Frauscher's iEEG Atlas from 1772 channels spanning the entire human cortex. Beta activity was the most dominant rhythm exhibiting fooofed maximum peak amplitudes across many cortical areas.

Super excited to announce that my preprint is finally out! Our study combines invasive electrophysiology, whole brain networks and neurotransmitter uptake to reveal a link between cortical beta and dopamine uptake in the brain.
