Leeds is probably the most unlucky city in Western Europe. 🎭 European City of Culture funding? Sorry we're leaving the EU. 🚄HS2? Sorry we spent too much in the chilterns. 🛫New Airport terminal? Sorry that's not climate friendly, but London Airport expansions are fine. (1/X).

Bad news for Nick, ans 30 (@an0n_Nic) who's real wages are down 9% since 2008 - the worst of any age group. Probably even worse if he's in London. Not so bad for Simon and Linda, ans 70, retired along the Dorset coast.

Remarkable that ONS figures show real wages in London are today at the same level they were in 2002 (i.e. pre-credit bubble) and are 8% down on their 2008 peak. This is the second worst performance of any UK region (after East Anglia). Two lost decades and counting. .

You really cannot trust any news outlet in 2025. "London suffers worst unemployment rate [6%] in the UK". *checks ONS*.> about average and quite good over the past 20 years.> has actually dropped 0.3% since Jan, so it's better. Sensationalism in 2025 is out of control.

Just straight up incompetence. You might need to delete 74,074 emails to save 1 litre of water, assuming that every email is stored in UK data centres (which they aren't). I'll probably end up drinking more water doing the task than I save. Who clears this stuff?

If that's all OpenAI have to release then it's over for them. My money is still on Google being the long term 'all-round' winners of the AI race. OpenAI will continue to be propped up by Microsoft who have the distribution to large enterprises locked down.

I don't have any evidence other than anecdote, but I assume when that happens in Sydney, people move to Melbourne. In SF, they went to Austin/ Miami. Berlin, Frankfurt & Munich. Basel & Zurich. Milan & Rome. Most countries have suitable overspill cities meaning you dont need to.

The conspirators would actually point to evidence that cost of living, and the general 'intensity' of London, is an early point of failure and is driving a lot of ambitious talent out of the UK to more balanced global cities due to a perceived lack of alternatives in the UK.

Quite a high risk strategic outlook on the country. Following this mindset means that if anything ever goes wrong in London, the country is stuffed. It's almost an argument (of which there are many) for why we need more diversification across UK, to decrease systematic risk.

Sometimes I try and think about why Britain's institutions act the way they do on this stuff. And I talk to a lot of people about this. And my best guess so far is that a pretty big percentage, perhaps as much as a third, of people in/near power believe London is our only hope.

Ultimately, if people feel worse off, don't have a secure roof, walk past derelict sites everyday waiting for construction, and feel the government isn't achieving what they're promising, then they will vote for change again (and unlikely Conservative so soon).

It almost definitely means Labours target of 1.5m homes is impossible to meet, even in the best case scenario of their planning regulation bonfire. It also means that construction will be down, impacting GDP figures, and price of homes up (population change vs supply).

This is just one example of hundreds of dwellings being delayed and having the project costs ramp up loads. I can name half a dozen other sites in LS1 alone caught up in this too, let alone the rest of the country.

BSA came after Grenfell (rightly so, what a tragedy). That's caused a huge delay in the planning system, which has caused funders to pull out of developments (such as the one in the image below).

Huge credit to anyone who foresaw the Grenfell fire having a huge influence on Reform getting elected in 2029.

You have to wonder what the FT's agenda is sometimes. Wow, 1,000 more influencers/crypto bros running their accounts through an LTD moved to Dubai last year vs the year before. This is out of 7.8 million directors in the UK, and makes no mention of those arriving/ staying.

This is pretty nuts. I’m going to see if I can load a planning application for a housing estate into it to generate a real world walk around.
