What is a socially progressive mental health service? What is our philosophy at
@FirstPersonCIC
? Ultimately, it's about people and connection!
I wrote this a little while ago to give some context. Feel free to check it out, like and share 😀 Thank you!
Next month I start a Doctorate. I just got the letter.
I'm a kid from an impoverished estate, who didn't go to school, whose Mum was on benefits, got free school meals and uniform from the grant.
I've had MH label, survived suicide & stigma.
Define yourself & be proud.

But I never heard it singing

Welcome to the World.

Your arl dad loves you ❤️
Mental health professionals....
Stop asking what is wrong with people...there's nothing wrong or broken with people, even if there was then you're not the one to fix it.
Start asking what has happened to people...listen with care, compassion and no judgement. Be human.
Ma, we bought a house. Remember, we had to rob candles from SFX because we had no leccy. Or making "pizza" with the stale bread because we had nothing else. I don't have to do that now, I'm blessed. But, I'm proud of every time we did it. I hope you're smiling down from the sky.
My heart breaks for this incredible bunch of people. But, whatever coward is responsible for this, you will not win. Fact. Michelle and the team are as tough as they come.
Go and pay this place a visit and dig deep. Please 🙏 It's a gem and a shining light in the dark to many.
It's no secret that I tried to end my own life three times in 2018. Things have been busy since then...no complaints.
Today I've been asked to join an Expert Reference Group for suicide prevention.
Humbled and honoured 🙏
I've been a Nurse for over a decade. I've lived and worked through the crap, been seriously assaulted 3 times & left with a permanent disability. No support then either.
I no longer work for the NHS machine.
I'm on the picket line tomorrow

I've been out since early speaking to those who have no home. I met "Anthony", "Leanne" and "Ste". A warm drink & conversation shared. Some chat about mental health, lots about trauma. Spoke about connection & togetherness. Practical and MH support offered. Here now, reflecting.
So, tomorrow I officially start my Doctorate at
@LJMUbusiness
...
Anybody who knows me knows I'm always busy, this will clearly continue, but I got a new chance at life in 2018 after a failed
#suicide
attempt. I'm taking it.
@FirstPersonCIC
will keep moving

forwards
There seems to be an alarming misinterpretation of the recent work of

Walton is one of the most socio-economically deprived areas in the country. Health & social inequalities obvious.
Rates of mental ill health are high.
I'll commit budget & resources to helping this. Who is with me?
Health & community leaders I'm speaking to you.
I'm going to be a Dad. Today, I found out it's a boy.
I'm now going to be the worst baby bore ever. Unfollow if you want.
Wow, my heart's going to burst.
Today is 5 years since my Mum died. So much happened back then. The mental scars and hazy memories of suicide remain.
@FirstPersonCIC
was born. From adversity comes triumph.
Today, we offered a MH service to young people and trained 15 drug/alcohol workers.
That's her legacy
Happy birthday, Mum. You would have been 72 today. I often still see/hear you. I even tried to join you. They gave me a label...I gave it back.
Your legacy lives on in
@FirstPersonCIC
. Every single week we support 100's of people, just like us.
Get the kettle on, girl. Feet up ❤️
I have dedicated the past 17 years of my life to supporting the mental health of others, these days it's a 24/7 gig. I am guilty of neglecting my own

Following an incredibly busy year, the
@FirstPersonCIC
Board and I have decided to dedicate the W/C 23rd Jan 2023 to staff support & development.
We will be closed completely from 23/01/23 - 30/01/23.
We can't fill up the cup of others if ours is empty.

I'm just in our hub doing invoices and a bit of reflecting. Last week we supported our 7500th person since April 2022. This is across all of our community facing work. Zero cost to the people, no waits, no barriers.
Our model works and our team is stronger than ever.
Blessed 🙌
Spirits are high on the picket line in the Swan. There's loads of boss people here, the cars haven't stopped beeping.
The people united will never be defeated.

I've worked in mental health for 18 years.
The biggest cause of mental ill-health? Poverty. Inequality. Socioeconomic Factors. Politicians.
The best way to help? Community. Connection. Eachother.
Just a quick message to anyone in or around our mental health hub on Lodge Lane.
If you're cold, want a warm, a cuppa, some toast, a chat. Then pop in, anytime we're there. You're always welcome. Tell your mates 🙏
Please can you help?
We are after a Men's bike if anybody has one to donate?
We need this for a new referral. A man who has recently lost his Wife to cancer, his bike was stolen whilst at the hospital.
With a bike he can access a full suite of mental health support.
Thanks 🙏
Trigger warning
Tonight I want to single out our very own Michael for praise.
A man who recently self-referred to txt to tell M he had a plan/intention to end his own life.
M handled it expertly, with compassion. Tonight, the man is safe and with emergency services 🙏🙏❤️❤️
I've had a few messages today asking for mental health support. Myself and
@FirstPersonCIC
have helped out, of course. But, mental ill-health doesn't knock off for the holidays. Remember that. Reach out and reach in.
@psychgeist52
Having led various forensic services....I'm sad and ashamed to say that they are not fit for purpose. The notion of therapeutic care is virtually absent in secure hospitals, however power and coercion is in high supply.
This past week has been a bit strange. I was trolled, which was weird and a first. It set me back a bit, being honest. I'm proud of where I am from, but even more proud of how far I have come. In 2018, it could have been curtains for me, but it wasn't though. Watch me go now 😉🖕
We started our organisation from nothing. No money/help/grants.
Today we've offered tonnes of free mental health support, fully funded by us with money we've earned.
Mental health and well-being courses, counselling, holistic therapies and women's group. Just today.
#proud
I've just received the timetable for the first week-long research workshop of my doctorate, starting Jan 2023.
In 2018, I tried to end my life three times - it didn't work, then I started

I'm speechless. Thanks for the support, especially my Mum in the sky ❤️
Walking through the Swan & spotted this little rasper in

charity shop. It's a little starter guitar, but I'm going to sort it out & get a local kid into music. That happened to me at The Cenny youth club way back when. Music became my first love & I kept out of bother.

let's move away from this 'chemical imbalance' or 'faulty genes' nonsense. As adults, let's take notice of the sociopolitical and community issues at play, then work to address the ones we can. This is how we can improve things.
I founded
@FirstPersonCIC
following three suicide attempts as I developed psychotic depression after the death of my Mum. Help wasn't available then, but it is now. We will always be there ❤️💙
An important message being delivered there from Paddy Pimblett. Mental ill-health is a serious as it gets, the consequences can be fatal. We are here, always. Speak to us, speak to anybody. Free, no waiting lists, no hoops to jump through, professionally-led.
Merry Christmas. This year I'm experiencing thoughts and feelings I've never ever experienced.
This boy and our family is undoubtedly the most important thing to me. He'll be whatever and whoever he wants. He's one week old and he's already my hero.
Wow.

ALL WELCOME 🙏
If you or others you know need mental health support over the Xmas period, then please get in touch with me personally by DM or

We are here because of you! We are here for you!
At
@FirstPersonCIC
we're seeing unprecedented demand for 1:1 support. We're providing what we can, funded by ourselves.
We get tonnes of referrals from BIG organisations. Let's hope they can find some room in their budget to commission us, especially if publicly funded.

Suicide is the biggest killer of men under 50. I am a man. I survived suicide, thankfully. I spoke, to another man. He helped me create the space I needed to speak. People need people.

My son is due to be born on 14th Dec. It's our first kid. I'm a bit scared, but:
-He'll be my number 1
-He'll get a better start than me.
-He'll know he's loved.
-He'll always be supported.
-He'll have a best mate for life.
-He'll be beautiful (assuming he has his Mum's looks)
Mental health is rooted in cohesive, socially-connected communities.
#Mentalhealth
is not the sole responsibility of the individual, nor the professional system. Let's work together to define what makes us well, not guess as to what makes us ill. Our gifts can be shared 😁👌
We're working alongside nonprofit partners on a new & exciting

This includes specialist MH education, support, counselling & coaching.

I love this place, you will too.
In both the nonprofit world and mental health world, collaboration beats competition every day of the week.
Some people have watched too much bleedin' Dragon's Den!
I was on a podcast recently and got asked how I, the founder of a MH org, look after my own MH. I was a bit stumped to be honest - not very good and not a good advertisement. It's got me thinking about how I need to prioritise myself more. Self care isn't selfish.
My other half has starting making juices. She's just insisted I try her lemon and ginger shot. If anyone sees my eyebrows, give me a shout. They've blown off
I'm now officially a Fellow of the Royal Society for Arts.
Through thought leadership and progressive action, we
@FirstPersonCIC
will continue to strive for social change.
Thank you
@theRSAorg
One of our customers has asked if we can share this video of him singing - he wanted to thank the people who paid it forward so he could enjoy a breakfast.
We never normally share pictures of our friends, but he asked if we would share his song ☺️
Good mental health is rooted in social cohesion and connectedness.....not the individual.
It is not the sole responsibility of the person or the professional service.
Let's work towards de-atomising our communities and rediscovering citizen power.
This is the way.
In 2018,
@FirstPersonCIC
started with just me and my backpack, going door to door or to public spaces offering free
#mentalhealth
support. This helped me mourn the loss of my Mum.
Well, it's 2022 and we've grew into an amazing
#socialenterprise
...but I'm still at it.
#grateful
Very proud and privileged to have been asked to represent
#mentalhealthnursing
on a film being pulled together for
@rcni
'Nursing Live' - first event of its kind, in Liverpool later this year.
My nursing journey has been eventful and somewhat unique.
Thanks
@prideinnursing
😁
Myself and
@FirstPersonCIC
have been working with an inspiring young women, 24 yrs old, great Mum. Something traumatic happened to her yesterday, very triggering...she dealt with it like a boss. We're unbelievably proud of her. Massive steps taken 👏 🙌
Dr Moncrieff has been clear on this, publicly and on several occasions. This, amongst other things, is about approaching mental health/ill-health with the best possible evidence. Over promising and under-delivering is not science. Reductionist approaches are always dangerous 3/4
In 2018 my mum died, I left NHS management to set up
@FirstPersonCIC
and work for myself.
Fast forward a bit...7 day weeks and 1am working. Not ideal and not recommended, but I love every minute of it. The hard yards are paying off, we are making a lasting impact.
RIP Mum ❤️
Sometimes my head hurts when I think of where I was in late 2018:
-Depressed and psychotic
-Drowning in grief
-At an all time career low
-Guilt ravaged
-Suicidal
I founded
@FirstPersonCIC
, now we help tonnes of ppl to help themselves.

Twitter is a funny old place at times. I've just been blocked by somebody for having a respectful and polite opinion. This obviously differed to theirs.
Wisdom & progression comes from being able to explore different views. Not avoiding them. The journey provides the lesson.

Another day on Lodge Lane Toxteth, L8. Offering free, immediate, qualified mental health support to all. DOING SOMETHING.
All people. Colour, ethnicity, religion, social background immigration status. All welcome.
These racist b*starts WILL NOT win.
We care about YOU.
How on earth did I manage to make half of this kid?
Thankfully, he's got his Mother's looks.
Lochlan, your arl dad loves you, kid. Nothing can stop you!
Could a public funded, citizen-led mental health service work? This would bypass all services as the "middle men" and be completely community run.
Just a question, I'm interested to hear your thoughts
Today is the anniversary of my Mum's death. 6 years. I wish you were here to meet our Lochlan. I tell him all about you, I sing him all our songs. I'll remember you forever & I'll still talk to you everyday, you can talk back if you want to. I love you, Ma. Lochlan loves you too.
We have received the most excellent news! I can't share everything yet, but we will soon be launching a new service which offers tailored support to people who have experienced domestic abuse. This will be in partnership with other not-for-profit partners.
Watch this space!
We've been collecting feedback on Children and Young People's MH services with a view to implementing a local/collaborative plan of action to help improve current provision. We've issued a call to action to any organisations who may want to be a part of the solution. Please share
In 2018, I tried to end my own life on three occasions. Thankfully, I didn't succeed.
Out of adversity comes triumph. I founded First Person Project C.I.C with the aim of pioneering a new way forward for mental health services, one which is by and for the people.
We opened our mental health hub six months ago on Lodge Lane, L8. Since then 100's of people have accessed our mental health support and education, free and without waiting lists.
The best bit...lots of our support is citizen driven & sustainable, building social wealth.
The King’s Speech didn't mention the Mental Health Bill, meaning vital reforms to the MH Act probably won't happen before the next election, despite Tory manifestos of 2017 and 2019.
The MH act is 40 years old. It's unfit for purpose.
This all doesn't surprise me.
Just finished a library session....now about to jump on this little fella. We've had a couple of DM's for
#mentalhealth
support this afternoon.
Why make people wait?
B*ollocks to barriers! Let's go!
I've had a lovely morning with Lee and the team from
@theODCharity
at Bloom Building, the most colourful building across LCR!
We at
@FirstPersonCIC
are really looking forward to working together.
People power is alive, well and thriving!
I love it!

As part of my consultancy work, I've spent the past few hours reviewing a new
#SuicidePrevention
safety plan for use during times of crisis. It's a very good tool and will be published soon.
If
@FirstPersonCIC
developed a people-led suicide prevention session would you come?
dominated practice for three decades, all on the promise of scientific validation in time to come. Well, 30+ years have passed and we haven't progressed. Outcomes are worse, more people impacted. Many have died. This isn't about stopping medication instantly, in fact 2/4
Access to mental health services in the UK is often limited. In 2020, 35% of adults who had experienced a mental health problem in the past year in England did not access any professional support.
It takes strength and courage to seek help.
Let's knock down the barriers too!
I'm a three time survivor of suicide, I feel blessed and fortunate for this. We started
@FirstPersonCIC
to prevent suicides, I think we help do this. We're starting a MH group for anybody who identifies as male. We want this to grow naturally. Any help/advice please comment 🙏
I love my city so much that it's hard to describe. I'm sad and disappointed. I'm not surprised, however. Racism, fascism and bigotry has ALWAYS existed here. Liverpool is not the socialist paradise that it is made out to be. Ask anyone aged say 30+ in L8, see what they say.
I was a bit unsure whether our writing club would go ahead today due to the weather. I turned up, put the kettle on, waited....
Packed house again....two new faces too, referred via NHS and Council.
Citizen led is best 👌
Believe it or not, I've been questioned on this decision today.
Our team of humans work incredibly hard, that's right...humans..just like you.
We need a break from the coal face. My job allows me the ability to make this happen. Our board agree.

Following an incredibly busy year, the

Board and I have decided to dedicate the W/C 23rd Jan 2023 to staff support & development.

As we end another incredible week at
@FirstPersonCIC
we have even more boss news to share. We've received news that a recent proposal has been accepted and we'll be increasing our domestic abuse and mental health support across Liverpool. This also means more jobs. More to come..
So, I'm back in work today after a 4 week break for paternity leave. I run my own company and even then 4 weeks simply isn't enough.
Baby needs more. Families need more.
At
@FirstPersonCIC
we'll do our best to learn and implement something suitable for all.
I had a one to one today with a remarkable young man. At just 20, he's been given all the labels, probably unfairly. Personality Disorder, Victim, Offender.
They don't seem to have helped him anyway.
He plays guitar, loves boxing, loves his cat. He's hilarious. He works hard.
July is always a hard month for me, it was this month in 2018 which changed my life. In the space of 8 days I lost my Mum to sepsis, but also lost myself. Three suicide attempts, several labels, several prescriptions for psychoactive medication and 8 months later I found myself
In June '23, we were commissioned by
@Mersey_Care
&
@lpoolcouncil
to deliver our 'FundaMENTALLY Healthy' suicide prevention work. We aimed to support 200 ppl in 12 mths - we've now supported 215 with over 2 months left
As a suicide survivor, I say that this is life-saving work.
I'm feeling really grateful tonight 🙏
Not that long ago, about this time in 2018, I wasn't feeling anything but sadness and despair.
It's incredible what social connection and finding purpose/meaning can do.
Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem.
